Teen accounts give your teenager the freedom to request their own rides and order their own meals, all under your supervision. Plus, with live safety features and real-time updates, you can follow along from pickup to dropoff.

Rides and meals at their fingertips
With the power to request a ride or a meal anytime, your teen will always have a reliable way to find rides, go where they need to go, order food, and get home to you. Additionally, age-restricted items that your teen is not old enough to buy—such as alcohol and some medications—will be filtered out.
Highly rated drivers and couriers
Your teen will always be matched with highly rated and experienced drivers and couriers. Before anyone can drive with Uber, they must undergo a thorough background check—and they’re rescreened every year.¹
Live trip and delivery tracking
When your teen requests a ride or places an order, you can follow along in the app with live trip and delivery tracking. You’ll also get real-time status updates. Additionally, teen trips are destination-locked, meaning drivers cannot change the destination of the trip—only your teen can.

With Share My Trip automatically turned on, you’ll receive notifications every time your teen requests a ride or orders a meal with Uber Eats. You'll be able to see how the trip is progressing, and with RideCheck we'll notify you of route deviations and midway drop-offs.* You can also view past trips they have taken in the Activity hub. Additionally, teen trips are destination-locked, which means drivers cannot change the destination of the trip—only your teen can.
Always-on safety features
All the rideshare safety features you know and love, like PIN verification and RideCheck™, will always be automatically turned on and cannot be turned off. If your teen chooses to set it up, the Audio Recording feature will also be automatically turned on for every trip. In addition, they’ll always have access to our on-trip safety features, such as being able to call 911, contact Support, or report an issue through the app.

This safety feature, if opted in to, is always on
Audio Recording Riders and/or drivers can record audio on their devices through the app. Recording will begin just before the trip starts. On iOS devices, the Uber app must be open and visible on your screen for recording to start. Once it begins, it will continue until a few moments after the trip ends—as long as there are no interruptions, like a phone call or another app taking over the microphone. This feature helps encourage safe, comfortable interactions on trips. Teen riders can opt in to this feature to have audio recorded on every trip.

This feature helps encourage safe, comfortable interactions on trips. Teen riders can opt in to this feature to have audio recorded on every trip.When a rider and/or driver uses this feature, the audio recording will be stored and encrypted on their phone so that no one—not even the person who initiated the recording—can access it. Uber can only access it if the user opens an incident report with our Support team and includes the audio file. Unless this happens, Uber cannot access any of the content. Under certain circumstances, Uber may share a copy of the submitted recording with a teen or their parent or guardian.

In an emergency, you or your teen can use the in-app Emergency Button to contact 911. You’ll both also have access to Uber’s Safety Incident Reporting Line while the trip is in progress.
After the trip, your teen can report a safety incident through the app either by selecting the trip in their trip history, tapping Help, then selecting Report Safety Issue, or by contacting Uber’s Safety Incident Reporting Line.

How to add a teen account
Follow these 3 steps to get your teen’s account set up:
- Tap Account > Family and teens to create a Family profile.
- Tap Invite family > Teen > Choose contact and select their name from your contacts. (They must be at least 13 years old.)
- Make sure your payment information is up to date before your teen requests their first ride.
After that, your teen will receive an invite by text and will need to complete a mandatory safety onboarding. Once they’re done, they’ll be ready for their first ride.

- How do teens pay for rides and meals?
Teens will use the default payment method attached to their guardian’s Family profile. Additionally, guardians can set individual spending limits and get notifications whenever their teen’s monthly limit is almost up. You can learn more about spending limits here.
- Can guardians book rides for teenagers?
Yes, guardians are permitted to book trips on behalf of their teens. Guardians can initiate the booking flow from their home screen by following these steps:
- From the home screen of your Uber app, click “Where to?”
- Select the guest selector in the top left corner
- Teens with their profile will appear. Select the teen account that you want to book a ride for
- Select the product type
- You will receive a confirmation and be redirected to teen trip tracking screen when booked
Rest assured, the enhanced safety features automatically turned on for your teen’s account will stay on for every ride, even those you arrange for them. These features, including live trip tracking, help you stay connected.
- Can guardians monitor teen rides and delivery orders?
Yes. Guardians will receive a notification every time their teen requests a ride or places an order, and they can select the notification to monitor their teen’s ride or delivery in the app with live trip and delivery tracking. Guardians can also access live trip and delivery tracking in the Activity section of their own Uber app or the Account > Orders section of their own Uber Eats app.
- Can teens bring other riders?
Yes. When a trip request comes from a teen account:
The teen is allowed to bring other riders with them, but those other riders must be 13 years old or older Guest riders aged 13 to 17 must have permission from a parent or legal guardian All teens have to sit in the back seat and should buckle up
- Can teens turn off the safety features?
The safety features for teen accounts on Uber are built into the experience and cannot be turned off, including live trip tracking, PIN verification, RideCheck™, and Uber’s safety line. In addition, RideCheck™ will be adjusted to be more sensitive during teen trips. If the app detects that something may have gone wrong, like a possible crash or an unexpected long stop, the teen and driver will receive a message checking to make sure they’re OK.
Audio Recording is the only feature that must be set up by teens. If your teen chooses to opt in to the Audio Recording feature, each of their trips will be automatically recorded (unless they later opt out by removing microphone permission for the app).
Drivers may still choose to record trip audio. If they do, the same privacy standards will apply. If a driver has Audio Recording set up, the app will notify your teen while their driver is on the way to pick them up. If they want to, your teen can cancel the ride and request a different one.
- How can I contact my teen’s driver?
While a teen is on a ride requested through a teen account, guardians can contact their teen’s driver directly by going to the Activity section of the Uber app or selecting the push notification about the trip, then choosing the phone icon next to the driver’s name.
Go to the phone icon on the live trip tracking page to call the driver. This functionality is not currently available for Uber Eats orders with teen accounts.
You can also message the driver during a trip in a three-way group chat with your teen. To do so, go to the Activity section or the live trip tracking page in the Uber app, then select the message icon next to the driver’s name.
- How will you prevent teens from ordering alcohol and other age-restricted items?
Teen accounts will have a teen-friendly view on Uber Eats. Age-restricted items that teens are not old enough to buy—such as alcohol and some medications—will be filtered out.
- What happens to my teen’s account when they turn 18?
When a teen turns 18, their teen account will be converted to a standard account, meaning they’ll have access to Uber services live in their area.
Even after their account has converted, however, they’ll continue to be on your Family profile. And as long as they’re part of the family account, you’ll still be able to follow their ride and order in the app.
- Where can I get help setting up a teen account?
Please make sure your Uber app is up to date. If you’re still experiencing issues setting up a teen account and/or you’re not seeing the “Add a teen” option in your Family profile settings, reach out to our Support team here.
By creating a teen account with Uber, you attest that, as your teen’s guardian, you have legal authority to act on your child’s behalf, that your child is between the ages of 13 and 17, and that you have conferred with any other parent or legal guardian of your teen. Use of Uber for teens is further governed by these specific Terms of Use.
In the event that you need to place a 911 emergency call on behalf of your teen, the dispatcher you’re connected with will see your location, not your teen’s.
*Notifications may be subject to your device settings, LTE or internet connectivity, or any software that can restrict messaging.
