Here’s how liability and damage protection works with your weekly car rental.
You have the car, but you haven’t gone online in your Driver app.
|Hertz provides||Liability protection: Up to Statutory Minimum Financial Responsibility limits (may be primary or secondary depending on the jurisdiction)|
You’re online with the app, but you’re not currently matched with a rider.
|Hertz provides||Physical damage protection, up to $1,000 per incident|
|Uber provides||Liability protection: $50K injury $100K total $25K property $200k excess liability (for accidents in California only)¹|
You’re matched with a rider, and on your way to pick them up or drop them off.
|Uber provides||At least $1M liability, $250K uninsured / underinsured motorist injury², contingent collision and comprehensive up to actual cash value ($1K deductible)³.|
¹ Uber maintains primary automobile liability insurance on your behalf if you do not maintain primary rideshare/TNC insurance of at least this amount.

³ Pays for damage to your vehicle in case of a covered accident if you maintain personal auto insurance that includes collision coverage for that vehicle while offline.
