FAQs

What are commuter benefits?

Commuter benefits are employer-provided benefits programs that help employees save money on their monthly commuting expenses.

Employees of companies that provide commuter benefits programs can pay for public transportation—such as trains, subways, busses, ferries, or certain vanpools of 6 or more passengers—for their daily commute using pre-tax dollars. Funds are moved to a commuter account before taxes are deducted.

Who is eligible for commuter benefits?

All uberPOOL riders in the United States are eligible to use pre-tax commuter benefits dollars for uberPOOL rides if their employer provides a commuter program.

Riders can now add select commuter benefits prepaid cards to their account as a Payment Profile, and choose this profile when riding uberPOOL for their commute.

Riders who request uberPOOL while using their commuter benefits prepaid card will only be connected to driver-partners in full-size vehicles.

Note: ETAs may be slightly longer when requesting uberPOOL with your commuter benefits prepaid cards.

Where is this payment option available?

Currently, this option is available to uberPOOL riders in all US cities that offer uberPOOL. It is also currently available for ExpressPOOL riders in all cities that offer ExpressPOOL, except for San Diego and Atlanta.

Is there a limit to how many rides I can take?

The IRS sets the maximum limit for pre-tax transit commuting benefits. The maximum monthly contribution is $255 for 2017. You can apply all of this towards uberPOOL rides. Once your commuter benefit card balance runs out for the month, you'll need to switch to another payment method.

Note: You'll need to set your monthly contribution amount with your benefits provider.

What is uberPOOL?

uberPOOL is our carpool option that matches you with riders heading in your direction so you can share your ride—and the cost. uberPOOL is always cheaper than uberX, up to 55% cheaper in some cities.

When you select uberPOOL, you'll be prompted to enter your destination. This can be an address, a venue name, or simply an intersection. We'll then show a guaranteed upfront fare before you request, so you'll always know what you're going to pay.

If my employer provides this benefit with a supported vendor, how do I get a card?

If you currently receive employee benefits from one of the providers above and don’t yet have a commuter benefit card, here’s how to get one:

1. Reach out to your human resources team or contact your benefits provider.

2. Ask whether your employer’s benefit plan offers a commuter debit card.

3. If available, request instructions on obtaining your card.
