Vehicle requirements
Does your vehicle qualify to drive with Uber? Most 4-door cars do, but requirements vary by vehicle option.
Minimum requirements
- 10-year-old vehicle or newer
- 4 doors
- Good condition with no cosmetic damage
- No commercial branding
- No town cars
- Pass a vehicle inspection
Registration
Uber accepts both official and temporary registration documents. The vehicle does not need to be registered in your name to qualify.
Insurance
All drivers must maintain their own insurance policy in accordance with state and local laws. In addition, Uber maintains automobile liability insurance on behalf of all US drivers.

Getting started in Tacoma
Required testing
Tacoma and Pierce County require the completion of 2 tests:
Required documents
You'll need to complete all of the following in order to be eligible to drive with Uber in Tacoma:
- Passed screening
- Uploaded valid driver's license, registration, and insurance documents
Passed the Tacoma city knowledge test and uploaded the certificate of completion
Passed the defensive driving course and uploaded the certificate of completion
- Passed your vehicle inspection
Business license
The City of Tacoma now permits you to immediately begin accepting trip requests in Tacoma and unincorporated Pierce County. If you accept a trip in Tacoma, Uber will provide the City of Tacoma with information to verify your affiliation with Uber and to allow the city to process the required licensing applications on your behalf.
The information includes:
- Your full legal name
- Your date of birth
- Your address
- Your phone number
- Your email address
How to drive in Seattle
If you are a Tacoma driver, you must first activate your account in Tacoma. After activation (or if you are an existing Tacoma driver), head to the Seattle Greenlight Hub to have an Uber Expert change your account settings so that you can take trips in both Seattle/King County and Tacoma/Pierce County.
UberX
Most newer cars qualify to drive with UberX, the most popular vehicle option for riders.
Additional requirements
- 4-door vehicle with independently opening passenger doors
- 5 factory-installed seats and seat belts
- Working windows and air conditioning
- No vans, box trucks, or similar vehicles
- No taxicabs, government cars, or other marked vehicles
- No salvaged or rebuilt vehicles
- No aftermarket seating modifications, such as installed seats, seat belts, or BedRyder systems
UberXL
Seat extra passengers—and earn higher fares—with your high-capacity vehicle.
Additional requirements
- 4-door vehicle with independently opening passenger doors
- 7 factory-installed seats and seat belts
- Working windows and air conditioning
- No vans, box trucks, or similar vehicles
- No taxicabs, government cars, or other marked vehicles
- No salvaged or rebuilt vehicles
- No aftermarket seating modifications, such as installed seats, seat belts, or BedRyder systems
Uber Comfort
Uber Comfort was designed to maximize possibilities on the Uber platform.
Additional requirements
- Maintaining eligibility on a different Uber option such as Uber Black, Uber Black SUV, Select, UberX, or UberXL
- Having a minimum star rating of 4.85 and have completed at least 100 trips
- Driving a vehicle with more legroom than smaller, compact cars eligible for UberX and that meet the minimum vehicle year requirement

Uber vehicle decals
The Uber decal must be displayed in your windshield when picking up and dropping off at the airport. Place it on your front passenger windshield facing outward.
Once you begin driving using Uber, we'll mail you a decal. You should receive it within 7 business days. If you ever need a new decal after you become a driver, you can request that a new one be mailed to you. You can also pick one up at your local Greenlight Hub.
