Vehicle requirements in your country

Which car is right for you? Make sure it meets Uber car requirements in your city and remember that you’ll make more money if you keep your costs low.

Your vehicle must-haves

  • Any with 4 full, independently opening doors
  • Good condition with no cosmetic damage
  • No commercial branding
  • No rebuilt/salvage titles
  • Pass a vehicle inspection

Registration

Uber accepts both official and temporary registration documents. The vehicle does not need to be registered in your name to qualify.

Insurance

All partners must maintain their own insurance policy in accordance with state and local laws. In addition, Uber maintains automobile liability insurance on behalf of all U.S. partners.

Items for your vehicle

Hands-free phone mount

Local regulations require use of a hands-free phone mount.

First aid kit

Local regulations require you to have a first aid kit in your vehicle.

Fire extinguisher

Local regulations require you to have a fire extinguisher for your vehicle.

Insurance

You can print a physical copy of your insurance brelow.

Portland business license

Get your free Portland business license here. Application instructions can be found here.

Print a Certificate of Compliance by logging into your Portland Revenue Online account, and upload a copy to your driver account. It’s a good idea to keep your proof of registration with you when you’re online.

Permits

The City of Portland requires every TNC driver to display their valid physical TNC for-hire permit to riders at all times while operating on the Uber platform. Failure to obtain and display this permit may result in a citation from the City of Portland. Uber will not pay for any citations that a driver incurs. You'll receive your TNC for-hire permit directly from the City of Portland.

Required testing

You are required to complete the Portland City Knowledge Test within 30 days after your account has been activated. This test is also an annual requirement. Don't worry—it's easy to complete. You can take the test online using the link below or at Uber Greenlight locations.

Tap below if you'd like to drive with Assist.

WAV

WAV allows riders with relevant disabilities to request wheelchair-accessible vehicles. When riders select the WAV option, they're connected with vehicles equipped with ramps or lifts.

With WAV, Uber is expanding on the city's and state’s efforts by connecting riders with wheelchair-accessible vehicles directly through the Uber app. For the first time, riders requiring a wheelchair-accessible vehicle have access to reliable on-demand transportation.

Portland Bureau of Transportation’s crash report requirements

Portland regulations require TNC drivers to file crash reports within 24 hours of a vehicle accident. You will need to report it if the accident is listed reportable under Oregon law and occurs when the TNC driver is providing TNC services.

Here is the list of accidents reportable under Oregon law:

  • Damage to any vehicle that is over $2,500 (even if your vehicle was the only one in the crash)

  • Any vehicle that is towed from the scene

  • An accident resulting in injury or death

  • Damage to anyone’s property other than a vehicle involved in this accident is more than $2,500

To help with this process, PBOT has created a new link on their website to file a crash report. You can find the website at transportationpermit.com and click on File a Vehicle Crash Report at the bottom of the left page.

Uber vehicle decals

The Uber decal must be displayed in your windshield when picking up and dropping off at the airport. Place it on your front passenger windshield facing outward.

Once you become an Uber driver, we will mail you a decal. You should receive it within 7 business days. If you ever need a new decal after you become a driver, you can request a new one be mailed to you. You can also pick one up at your local Greenlight Hub.

Local requirements

To ensure that you stay safe and compliant on the road, all drivers should be aware of local regulatory requirements.
