Getting ready for your first trip

Many highly rated drivers say that they keep these tools ready in their car before they drive. Local laws and restrictions may apply.

1. A phone mount for navigating hands-free.

2. A Bluetooth headset for taking calls (where permitted by law).

3. A phone charger so you never run out of battery while driving.

4. An Uber decal (also called a sticker or trade dress), required in some cities.

Preparing to drive in your city

When you sign up to drive, the local Uber team will send you an email with information about local regulations. This may include whether your car needs an inspection and how to display your Uber decal.

Tips

We asked drivers for more tips about getting ready to drive.

Keeping it clean

Many drivers said a clean car is key to getting good ratings and compliments.

Having a plan for music

Highly rated drivers have told us they consider what style and volume of music (either their own or a radio station’s) might be pleasant and not too distracting for riders. When in doubt, they ask if riders have a station request or if they’d like to play music from their own phone.

Frequently asked questions

  • Looking to drive with Uber but haven’t signed up yet? Start by downloading the Uber Driver app from Google Play or the App Store (search for Uber Driver). Then look here for a quick step-by-step guide to starting an account.

  • Many cities require an inspection before driving with Uber. Inspection criteria vary depending on your location. If you want to know in advance what the requirements are for your town, contact your local Uber Greenlight Hub for information.

  • It’s easier than ever to drive with Uber, even if you don’t have access to a car of your own. To see options for renting an approved car in your city, sign in to drivers.uber.com and select Vehicles from the menu, then View rental options.

  • Depending on your location, you may learn that local regulations require drivers to display trade dress. This is just a formal name for the decal/sticker with the Uber logo that’s usually displayed on the front or rear windshield of your car. You can request one here.

If you no longer have access to the Uber platform, please discard or return any Uber branded decals or signage that you may have used for your vehicle
