If you’ve been in an accident, here’s what to do.
Insurance maintained by Uber for delivery drivers
COVERED: Third-party liability
Accidents happen. Suppose you’re at fault and another person gets hurt or their vehicle gets damaged. In that case, our third-party liability insurance may cover the cost of injuries or damage based on your state, whether you were online, en route, or on-trip.
View more details on insurance currently maintained by Uber in your state in your Driver app. From the menu, choose Account, then select Insurance.
NOT COVERED: Damage to your own vehicle
Coverage maintained by Uber does not pay for repairs to your car at any period of a delivery. If your personal auto policy covers delivery activity, your personal insurance policy may cover this. Check with your personal insurance provider to find out if your policy covers delivery activity.
Injuries to you
Coverage maintained by Uber does not pay for your injuries during any period of a delivery. In most states you may be able to opt in for Optional Injury Protection insurance, which provides coverage for your own medical expenses, disability, and survivor benefits when delivering. Go here to learn more.
When is Uber insurance applicable?
Uber maintains commercial liability insurance on your behalf. What’s covered depends on factors such as who was at fault; whether you were offline, online, en route, or on-trip; and your personal insurance policy. Learn more about the commercial delivery insurance coverage Uber maintains on your behalf below.
Coverage when you're offline
Your personal auto insurance covers you while you’re offline. You must maintain personal automobile insurance at mandatory minimum limits at all times while on the Uber app.
Uber does not maintain any coverage when you are offline.
Coverage when you're online and available for a delivery trip
In an accident where you’re at fault and another person gets hurt or their vehicle gets damaged, Uber’s third-party liability insurance may cover the cost of injuries or damage in amounts up to at least state auto insurance minimums.
Depending on the law of your state, Uber may maintain extra coverage. See details in the Driver app.
Coverage when you’re en route or on a delivery trip
Uber maintains insurance for deliveries on the Uber platform, including coverage up to $500,000 (or more, where required) for property damage and injuries to third parties involved in an accident where you’re at fault.
Depending on the law of your state, Uber may maintain extra coverage. See details in the Driver app.
What to do if you're in an accident
If you’re involved in an accident while on a delivery trip, we’re here to help you navigate the situation. Read a brief overview of what to do or watch this video.
You can also start a crash report now.
Step 1
Ensure that everyone involved is OK. If there are injuries or damage, contact the police and paramedics. Be sure to save the police report number if there is one.
Step 2
Take photos of any damage to the vehicles involved, including your own, and get the contact and insurance information of the other involved drivers. We recommend taking photos of the accident location, too, if it’s safe to do so.
Step 3
The easiest way to report a crash is through the Driver app. Select the Safety Toolkit by tapping the blue shield symbol in the bottom left corner of the map, then tap Report a crash. Report what happened and submit your claim.
To speak with our trained support staff, choose Safety from the Help section of your app, then select Safety Incident Reporting Line. You can also submit a crash report here.
Whichever path you choose, please complete this process as soon as it’s reasonable to do so.
After your claim is submitted
A notification will show up on your Driver app homepage directing you to the Crash Center. This is your go-to resource for contacting Uber’s insurer, viewing your claim’s status, seeing rental car options, and more.
Third parties can report an accident here.
Coverage options for however you earn
If Optional Injury Protection is available in your state and you choose to purchase it, coverage is available to you and your family members in case you’re injured in an accident and can’t deliver. Optional Injury Protection covers disability payments, medical expenses with no deductibles, and survivor benefit payments for your family members.
Vehicle Interruption Coverage (VIC) is designed to help people who deliver with Uber bounce back quickly and keep their momentum. If VIC is available where you deliver and you choose to purchase it, VIC provides a $2,500 lump-sum benefit if a covered accident or theft while delivering leaves your vehicle inoperable for at least 24 hours.
