To drive with Uber, you'll need to have a private hire licence
Steps to get a private hire licence
Step 1 - Complete VRQ Course
Also known as the BTEC, this qualification contains nine modules which assess the skills needed to be a professional private hire driver.
Step 2 - Complete Enhanced DBS
Formerly known as a CRB check, you will need your driving licence, passport (or biometric residence permit), and a proof of address (e.g. utility bill or bank statement) to complete. Apply for your DBS via the council website.
Step 3 - Complete Knowledge Test
This test will check your understanding of Rotherham’s roads, districts, and places of interest. The tests are taken on council premises and last for approximately two hours.
We can provide a revision guide with a summary of the test’s three sections; just ask a member of staff at the Greenlight Hub.
You must book your Knowledge test directly with the council. Further information can be found the in the application pack (point 4).
Step 4 - Complete Medical Check
You need to complete a Group 2 Medical Check to demonstrate you are fit to drive. This can be carried out by a GP at one of the council’s approved surgeries in Rotherham; a list of these can be found on their website or you can request a print out from our office. Prices vary by practice.
Step 5 - Complete Driving Test
This test checks your driving ability, and is also carried out by the council themselves. Although it is not a DVSA test, it is very similar to the standard driving test completed by those getting their driving licence for the first time. The driving test can be done before or after the knowledge test.
Step 6 - Submit Application
Once you have completed all of the above steps in any order you are ready to make your application to Rotherham Council. Visit their office at Riverside House with a completed application form and all of the necessary documentation to finish the process.
Council address: Riverside House, Main St, Rotherham S60 1AE
