Vehicle requirements in the UK
Which car is right for you? Make sure it meets the requirements below, and remember that you'll make more money if you keep your costs low.
Your vehicle must-haves
- PHVL Licence from an accepted council. Find your region’s accepted council here
- Private Hire motor Insurance to cover you and your vehicle. More details can be found here
- Model year in line with local licensing authority requirements
- 4-door car or minivan
- Good condition with no cosmetic damage
- No commercial branding
- All vehicles must be licensed to carry a minimum of 4 passengers

TfL Age & Condition Policy:
From 1 January 2023, all PHVs licensed for the first time must be ZEC and meet the Euro 6 emissions standard. Between 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2022, PHVs under 18 months old must be zero emission capable (ZEC) and meet the Euro 6 emissions standard when licensed for the first time. PHVs over 18 months old must have a Euro 6 (petrol or diesel) engine when licensed for the first time. If you'd like to know more, you can read TfL's requirements here.
Estate Policy: For UberX we accept Estate versions of every vehicle (i.e. we take the Skoda Octavia which means we also take the Skoda Octavia Estate). However, we DO NOT accept ANY Estate vehicles on Exec or Lux.
We accept manual and automatic transmission vehicles, however we recommend automatic transmission as this makes for a smoother and easier driving experience for the rider and driver.
*If your vehicle model does not appear on our eligible vehicle list, but meets the below stated criteria for Comfort, UberXL, Exec, Lux or Exec XXL, fill out this form. In case we decide to add the vehicle model to the eligible vehicle list, it would appear on the list within 4 weeks.
Vehicle options in the United Kingdom
UberX
Most newer cars qualify to drive with UberX. It's one of the most popular options for riders.
Requirements:
- PHVL Licence from an accepted council
- Model year in line with local licensing authority requirements
- 4-door vehicle
- Good condition with no cosmetic damage
- No commercial branding
- Licensed to carry a minimum of 4 passengers
Note : The same requirements would apply if you would like to opt in to take Uber Pet and UberX Priority trips.

Green
Offer rides in 100% electric vehicles. We aim to make every car on the Uber app in London fully electric.
Requirements:
- PHVL Licence from an accepted council
- Fully electric vehicles
- Hybrids are not included
- Seats at least 4 passengers in addition to the driver

Comfort
Comfort was designed to maximise earnings for drivers on the Uber platform who have a mid-sized vehicles with more legroom. Currently live in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, South West, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Southampton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, North East, Sheffield, Cardiff, Nottingham, Brighton and Cambridge
Requirements:
- PHVL Licence from an accepted council
- Vehicle model maximum of 7 years old for London and 10 years old for RoUK. This policy will be implemented on a rolling basis. Eg. in 2026, you need to have a vehicle which is manufactured in 2019 or later for London and 2016 or later for RoUK
- All vehicles eligible for Exec are also eligible for Comfort.
Note : The same requirements would apply if you would like to opt in to take Business Comfort trips

UberXL
Seat more passengers – and get higher fares – with your high-capacity vehicle.
Requirements:
- PHVL licence from an accepted council
- Must seat at least 6 riders in addition to the driver
- Model year in line with local licensing authority requirements
- Four-door vehicle
- Good condition with no cosmetic damage
- No commercial branding

Exec
Offering premium rides with experienced drivers. Currently live in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, South West, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Southampton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, North East, Sheffield, Cardiff, Oxford, Brighton and Cambridge.
Requirements:
- PHVL Licence from an accepted council
- Drivers who have completed over 1000 trips
- Maintained a rating of 4.85 or above
- Model year in line with local licensing authority requirements
- 4-door vehicle
- Good condition with no cosmetic damage
- No commercial branding
- Vehicle model maximum of 6 years old for London. This policy will be implemented on a rolling basis. Eg. in 2026, you need to have a vehicle which is manufactured in 2020 or later for London.

Lux
The ultimate luxury vehicles and experience currently live in London
Requirements:
- PHVL Licence from an accepted council
- Drivers who have completed over 1000 trips
- Maintained a rating of 4.9 or above
- Model year in line with local licensing authority requirements
- 4-door vehicle
- Good condition with no cosmetic damage
- No commercial branding
- Lux vehicles must seat at least 4 riders in addition to the driver.
- Vehicle model maximum of 6 years old for London. This policy will be implemented on a rolling basis. Eg. in 2026, you need to have a vehicle which is manufactured in 2020 or later for London.

Exec XXL
High-end cars for large groups and luggage. Currently live in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Merseyside, Brighton & Sussex, Sheffield, Cardiff, and Cambridge and East Anglia.
Requirements:
- PHVL licence from an accepted council
- Maintained a rating of 4.85 or above
- Vehicle model maximum of 6 years old for London and 10 years old for RoUK. This policy will be implemented on a rolling basis. Eg. in 2026, you need to have a vehicle which is manufactured in 2019 or later for London and 2016 or later for RoUK

Assist
This option is designed for riders living with disability, older adults or those who need an extra hand when getting from place to place. Assist vehicles can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers and collapsible scooters.
Assist vehicles must:
- Be able to accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, collapsible scooters and other assistive devices
- Model year in line with local licensing authority requirements
- Four-door vehicle
- Good condition with no cosmetic damage
- No commercial branding
- All vehicles must be licensed to carry a minimum of 4 passengers
In order for drivers to be eligible for Assist, they must have
- PHVL licence from an accepted council
- A 4.7-minimum rating; and
- Have completed over 500 trips (London) or 150 trips (rest of UK)
- If you meet the criteria set out above, all you need to do is complete the online disability equality training. Once you have successfully completed this, you should start receiving Uber Assist trip requests within 48 hours. You can access the training via this link.

Access
Wheelchair accessible vehicles that allow wheelchair users to remain in their wheelchairs as they ride.
Requirements:
- PHVL licence from an accepted council
- Vehicles be able to accommodate non-foldable wheelchairs
- You can rent a WAV if you do not have one here
- If you already own a WAV, you will need to visit your local GL for a vehicle inspection which you can read how to book here
- Equipped with a ramp or lift
- Must complete a certified accessibility training course
In order for drivers to be eligible for Access, they must have
- A 4.7-minimum rating; and
- Have completed over 500 trips (London) or 150 trips (rest of UK)
If you meet the criteria set out above, all you need to do is complete the online disability equality training. Once you have successfully completed this, you should start receiving Uber Assist trip requests within 48 hours. You can access the training via this link.

Teens
Uber for Teens is a service that lets young people aged 13-17 ride with Uber, as long as they have their parent or guardian’s permission. After a teen is invited by their guardian to sign up, they can start booking their own trips.
Requirements:
- No history of allegations of certain interpersonal incidents, including allegations of inappropriate comments, post-trip contact, and verbal altercations;
- No history of failing Real-Time ID Check;
- A minimum number of trips with Uber
- A minimum rating given by your Riders
If you meet the criteria set out above, all you need to do is complete the online safeguarding training.
If Uber for teens has launched in your city and you meet the eligibility criteria, you will see it as an option within the Driver Preferences section in your app. If you wish to not receive Uber for teens trips, you can toggle off that option in your Uber app anytime.
UberX Share
UberX Share is a new ride option that allows riders who are traveling in a similar direction to share a journey and the cost, and gives drivers access to more earning opportunities. Your trip earnings for an UberX Share trip will be the same as an equivalent UberX journey, from the start of the first pick-up to the final drop-off. UberX Share helps to reduce the time you spend waiting for your next trip, keeping you busy while out on the road.
Requirements:
- You have completed 700 trips on Uber
- Your insurance provider covers ‘multi-fare passenger shared rides’
All vehicles eligible for UberX are eligible for UberX Share. UberX Share is grouped with UberX in the ‘ Driver Preferences’ section of the Driver app. If you do not wish to receive UberX or UberX Share requests, you may opt out of both. Black Cab
Requirements:
- Valid Drivers Licence - Copy of original full drivers licence (front and back) uploaded remotely during onboarding. Driver name, date of birth, full address and profile photo. These details must match other documents.
- Valid TfL Hackney Carriage Driver Licence - Copy of original Taxi Driver licence uploaded remotely during onboarding. Must include details of licence number, badge number, date of birth must match other documents.
- Valid TfL Taxi driver badge - Photo of Taxi drivers badge uploaded remotely during onboarding. Badge number must match the Taxi Licence. Yellow and green badges accepted.
- Profile picture - A driver will take a selfie as a profile picture remotely. There will be instructions to ensure the photos are high quality, such as: face must be centred, good lighting, solid/plain background and no one else visible in the frame.
- Insurance Certificate - Copy of insurance certificate that will include: Insurance company, policy no. and expiry date. Details of insurance checked against vehicle details.
