Teen accounts on Uber

As the world continues to grow and change, our commitment to providing a safe experience for drivers and riders will always be a priority. This is especially true with the introduction of rides for teens.

Teen accounts are the only authorized way for teens aged 13-17 to use the Uber platform with consent from their legal guardian. Guardians who add a teen account to their Family profile will be notified every time their teen requests a ride—and they’ll get real-time alerts plus live trip tracking so they can follow their teen’s ride in the app, from pickup to dropoff.

Mandatory safety education for teens

Before a teen can request their first ride, they must complete a safety onboarding process that teaches them about the safety features that are available to them on every ride.

Informed guardians

Guardians will receive tips on how to prepare their teen for their first ride after the teen sets up their account. Guardians will also have access to live trip tracking and will receive status updates for every trip their teen requests. They’ll also be able to contact you directly during the trip.

Always-on safety

Teen riders will always have access to safety features including PIN verification and RideCheck™. They can also choose to enable Audio Recording during their rides.

Always-on safety

These safety features are always on

Verify My Ride
Before a teen gets in the car, they’ll have to give you a unique PIN. You’ll be unable to start the trip until you enter the correct code into the Driver app. This will help the teen make sure they’re getting into the right car—and it will help ensure that you’re picking up the right rider.

RideCheck™

If the ride goes unusually off-course, stops unexpectedly, or ends early, RideCheck™ will alert you and your teen rider and message you both in the app to find out if you’re OK or need help.

This safety feature, if opted in to, is always on

Audio Recording
You and/or your riders can record audio on your devices through the app. To help ensure that the beginning of the trip is recorded, recording will begin when you accept their trip request. This feature helps encourage safe, comfortable interactions on trips. Teen riders can opt in to have audio recorded on every trip automatically.

When this feature is used, the audio recording will be stored and encrypted on the user’s phone so that no one—not even the person who initiated the recording—can access it. Uber can only access it if the user opens an incident report with our Support team and includes the audio file. Unless this happens, Uber cannot access any of the content.

Look out for Uber • Teen

For example, to help you easily identify teen rides, your offer card may read “UberX • Teen.” If you see this, it means the trip request is from an official teen account holder—so there should be no surprises at pickup.

Drive with confidence

As a reminder, if your rider looks younger than 18 and your offer card did not say “Teen,” you can cancel the trip and select Unaccompanied minor as the reason.

If at any time you decide you no longer want to receive teen trip requests, you can opt out by going to Preferences in the Driver app.

Drive with confidence

If you notice at pickup that your rider looks younger than 18 and the ride request did not have the “UberX • Teen” label, you may ask them to show you a valid driver’s license or ID card for confirmation.

If your rider is unable to provide confirmation, you can decline the trip and report it to Uber because minors are not allowed to use the Uber platform without an official teen account.

If you don’t want to leave your rider wondering what happened, you may decide to let them know why you can’t accept the trip.

Teen accounts are live in select cities in California for Uber Eats only.

  • Yes. When a trip request comes from a teen account:

    • The teen is allowed to bring other riders with them, but they must be 13 years old or older
    • Guest riders aged 13 to 17 must say that they have permission from a parent or legal guardian
    • All teens have to sit in the back seat and should buckle up

You can cancel the trip if:

    • A rider is under the age of 13
    • A guest rider aged 13 to 17 says that they don’t have permission from a parent or legal guardian
    • All the teen riders can’t fit in the back seat
  • As always, you can decline any of the trip requests you receive without affecting your rating. If you accept a trip request and arrive at pickup to find an unaccompanied minor who doesn’t have a teen account, you can cancel the trip and select Unaccompanied minor as the reason.

If you cancel a trip, you can let the rider know why. That way, they won’t be left wondering what happened.

  • No, you will not be able to contact teen riders’ guardians at this time. However, a parent/guardian may call you during the trip. Your phone number will stay anonymous in the app, so they won’t have your personal contact information.

  • You won’t. All calls—including those made by guardians—will be connected through Uber’s private calling system.

  • *Teen accounts will generally be eligible for trips within the broader metropolitan area for each city.
