Commercial Insurance Coverage FAQ
If you’re interested in becoming a Commercial Driver using a commercial vehicle, such as a licensed for-hire vehicle, black car, limousine, livery vehicle, or taxi, you must have your own commercial insurance to drive with Uber.
- 1. What is the difference between a rideshare/TNC driver and a commercial driver?
When you drive with Uber as a rideshare / TNC (Transportation Network Company) driver, Uber maintains commercial auto liability policies on your behalf that comply with all coverages required of TNCs. Rideshare drivers still need personal auto policies to provide coverage when they are not on the app.
When you drive with Uber as a commercial driver, you must have commercial auto insurance (personal auto insurance does not qualify). The auto liability policies that Uber maintains for rideshare drivers do not cover your trips as a commercial driver, whether you drive premium trips (like Uber Black and Uber Black SUV) or economy trips (such as UberX, UberXL, and Uber Comfort, etc).
If you prefer to drive on the Uber platform as a rideshare/TNC driver, you are not required to purchase commercial auto insurance. However, if you provide proof of appropriate commercial insurance, as well as required commercial permits and other documents, you may have additional earning opportunities on Uber.
- 2. What’s the difference between personal auto insurance and commercial auto insurance?
When you drive for a fee, such as earning with Uber, you need commercial auto liability insurance. Always read your commercial policy contract to understand the complete coverage and exclusions.
💡 Key difference: Personal insurance typically does not cover your use of a vehicle to earn on Uber.
- 3. I have extra coverage on my personal auto insurance. Is that commercial insurance?
Some insurers offer the option for you to expand your personal auto insurance to include rideshare and delivery coverage that could provide you with greater protection and get you back on the road faster in the event of an accident.
This is typically an extension of your personal auto policy and is not sufficient to meet the commercial auto insurance requirements for commercial drivers.
Contact your insurance agent, broker, or company to learn about personal and commercial options.
- 4. Can I add more drivers and vehicles to my commercial account with Uber?
You can add more drivers to your commercial account with Uber, where Fleet Management is offered:
- Other requirements apply, but regarding insurance, additional drivers registered on your Uber commercial account must be listed on the commercial insurance policy.
To add more vehicles to your commercial account, each additional vehicle must:
- Be commercially licensed in your jurisdictions
- Have valid commercial auto insurance meeting your jurisdictions' requirements
- 5. Can I go back to being a rideshare/TNC driver at any time?
Yes. If you’ve followed the process to earn with Uber as a commercial driver but want to switch back to driving as a rideshare/TNC driver, you may follow these steps to contact Uber’s Support team to change your account:
- Open your Driver app
- Click 'Help'
- Select 'Contact Us' to reach out to Support
Be sure to research additional requirements for your jurisdictions. For example, you may need to change your vehicle registration from commercial use to personal use.
- 6. What are the requirements for being a commercial driver on the Uber platform?
If you wish to drive as a commercial driver on the Uber platform, you need to comply with the relevant requirements for commercial drivers in your jurisdiction, including obtaining and maintaining relevant commercial permits and active commercial auto insurance.
Based on your agreement with Uber, Uber may require you to verify your current insurance is valid and meets applicable limits by submitting additional documentation at any time. Failure to maintain required insurance and keep your driver and vehicle documents on your account current is a violation of your platform access agreement.
- 7. You might still have more questions…
- Does commercial auto insurance cover business use outside of driving with Uber?
- Do I need both personal and commercial auto insurance for my commercial vehicle?
- Are my friends and family covered when they use my commercially insured vehicle?
- Is the annual premium cost for commercial auto insurance per driver or vehicle?
- Are there fees for making changes to my policy?
These are all good questions, and the answers will depend on your policy terms. Discussing them with your insurer or insurance agent will get you the answers and pricing specific to your situation. If you don’t already have an agent, Inshur may be able to help.*
