Uploading your documents
To drive using the Driver app, you are required to upload certain documents to get your account set up. Refer to the information below when uploading each document.
Required documents
- Driver's license
- Vehicle insurance and registration
- Background check
- Profile photo
These documents are required across the US, but if you visit a local Greenlight Hub or review your city's local information, you can get potential additional requirements for driving on the Uber platform.
Tips for uploading your documents
Following these suggestions and rules when uploading your documents can help the process go smoother.
Make sure all required details are clearly visible
Ensure that your document contains all required details before uploading. The entire document should be clearly visible.
Upload your driver's license first
This will speed up the approval process when we need to cross-check your license with other documents.
Upload one image or PDF at a time
You can go here to get more information about uploading your documents through the Driver app.
Submit original documents only
We do not accept photocopied documents, so please make sure you only upload originals.
It may take up to 48 hours for your documents to be reviewed and verified.
How to renew your FHV permit
Pay the TLC renewal fee
Pay the renewal fee sent to you by the TLC. You can pay this in advance of the FHV expiration at the link below to avoid missing the expiration date on your FHV permit.
Send documents
Send copies of the vehicle registration and insurance (FH1 and Certificate of Liability) to the TLC. Stop by a Greenlight Hub if you need help scanning copies of your documents.
Email: renewvehmr@tlc.nyc.gov
Get an inspection
Attend the inspection appointment at the location and on the date in the email the TLC sends you.
Uber cannot request these appointment inspections for a vehicle owner. If an inspection is missed, a new one will be scheduled by the TLC.
The TLC’s Open Data list
If your TLC license or for-hire vehicle license plate is not on the New York City TLC’s Open Data Active Drivers or Active Vehicles list, this means it is illegal for you to transport passengers with Uber (or through any other rideshare app or for-hire base in New York City). Because of this, we're required to temporarily waitlist your Uber account until you resolve the issue with the TLC.
How to get reactivated
Go to the TLC in person
Visit the TLC’s Long Island City facility to address the problem with your license or vehicle. If you want your Uber account reactivated right away, ask the TLC for documentation showing that your license or vehicle is in good standing again. We will not be able to assist you at one of our Greenlight Hubs, nor will we be able to reactivate your account, until you have completed this step.
Bring your paperwork
If you’re able to get your license or vehicle in good standing and you want to get back on the road the same day, bring your documentation from the TLC to one of our Greenlight Hubs.
If you’re not in a rush to get reactivated or you don’t receive documentation from the TLC, your license or vehicle should reappear on the TLC’s active list once it's in good standing again. When it reappears, your account will be automatically reactivated in our system within one business day.
Watch for a confirmation
As soon as your account has been reactivated, you'll get a text notification from Uber that you’re all set and can get back on the road.
Pro tip: The TLC’s Long Island City facility is located directly above our Falchi Greenlight Hub in Queens, on the 3rd floor. Head there to resolve the issue with the TLC, then go downstairs to the Greenlight Hub with your documentation from the TLC, and one of our Experts will help you get reactivated on the spot.
