Get a licence in Australia

The South Australian government requires all drivers using the Uber app hold a Driver Accreditation and update your vehicle’s CTP insurance premium class. You will also need Operator Accreditation (OA) if you are using your own vehicle. Here’s how to get the required accreditations.

Before you apply for a DA

To get a DA, you’ll need to:

  • Pass a Working with Children Check
  • Get a Certificate of Fitness after passing a medical check

While you’re waiting for your Working with Children Check to process, we recommend getting your vehicle inspected.

Steps in detail

  • You can initiate a WWCC yourself by visiting the DCSI portal. Once initiated, DCSI will send you an email to activate your account on DCSI's online portal. You will need to enter your information and pay for the check on DCSI's online portal. Once the check has finished processing, you will receive an email and a letter from DCSI with the check result (ordinarily 10-30 business days).

  • You need to get a NCHC from a provider accredited by the ACIC before you can apply for a DA.

    • The certificate’s purpose/position must only state 'Driver Accreditation / Licensing' and
    • The certificate must be less than 3 months old when you submit it for your DA and OA (if applicable)

  • Complete a Certificate of Fitness for Commercial Vehicle Drivers through a medical practitioner. Make sure to print out and fill in the relevant form ahead of the medical assessment, and that it is dated within the last 3 months of when you apply for your Driver Accreditation.

  • To get an Operator Accreditation, you will need to pass a government-accredited inspection (unless exempt - refer to SA website for more details). You need to book and pass an inspection at any of the approved inspection stations for rideshare vehicles:

    • Redbook Inspect (Prospect)
    • Royal Automobile Association (Mile End)
    • Rightways Automotive Services (Hindmarsh)

    We recommend making sure your vehicle is in good condition before attending an inspection. Once complete, upload the vehicle inspection report in the Uber app. The inspection is valid for 1 year.

    State regulation means you must display the vehicle inspection sticker on the windscreen front left hand corner. Visit the SA government website here for more details.

  • Fill in all the applicable DA and OA forms and you can submit it at any Service SA Centre (you can submit both at the same time). Be sure to bring physical copies of supporting documents needed for each accreditation.

    • DA: Complete the relevant forms found here and bring with you physical copies of your WWCC, Certificate of Fitness and result of your NCHC
    • OA: Complete the relevant OA form, Plan of Operation, and the form to upgrade your vehicle’s Compulsory Third party Insurance premium as required. These forms can be found here. Bring with you physical copies of your Certificate of Inspection (vehicle inspection report) and result of your NCHC.

    State regulation means you must display an Uber identification sticker on the driver side of your vehicle’s rear windscreen whenever you are using the Uber app (and removed when you are not). Order your Uber sticker online here, allowing 5-7 days for delivery.

  • You can provide your ABN details and confirm that you are registered for GST in the ‘Invoice Settings’ section of your Partner Dashboard. Scroll down to fill in the field marked ‘Australian Business Number (ABN)’ and confirm that you are registered for GST.

  • In South Australia, you and Uber have certain legal obligations to ensure that every trip is safe and welcoming. To make sure you are aware of these obligations, you are required to complete driver safety education before you can start using the Uber driver app. It should take less than 30 minutes to complete. You can complete the driver safety education course via logging in to the Uber Driver app/website.

    The safety education covers important topics such as avoiding discrimination, preventing sexual harassment, assisting riders with disability, vehicle maintenance and inspection, making sure you are fit to drive and general road safety.

ANCAP vehicle safety policy

All vehicles must have a 5-Star ANCAP rating or fall under our vehicle exemption policy to qualify for the Uber platform. Vehicles that do not meet our requirements will not be eligible to receive trip requests, and may be deleted from your account.
