Top questions from drivers
- What do I need to sign up?
To sign up to drive, you need to be at least 21 years old, have the right to work in Australia and hold a valid full driver’s licence in the state or territory you plan to drive in. Requirements may vary by state - see further requirements and information on the Requirements page. If you don’t have access to a car, vehicle rental options are available in many Australian cities.
- What is the signup process like?
There are a few steps to the Uber signup process. First, sign up to drive online. Next, you’ll need to upload your supporting documents, and obtain rideshare licensing as required by your state's transport authority. You’ll also need to pass a background check and, depending on where you plan to drive, complete a vehicle inspection. Requirements vary depending on where you plan to drive - visit the requirements page to learn more.
Signing up, including the rideshare licence application process, takes between 1 week and 3 months, depending on your local regulations.
- Does it cost money to sign up?
The Uber Driver app is free to download and signing up to drive is free. To meet ridesharing requirements in your city, there may be costs involved, such as paying for a rideshare licence and vehicle inspection. For more information on what you need to get started, visit the requirements page.
- Do I need my own car?
If you want to drive with Uber but need a car, third-party vehicle providers may be able to provide suitable options. Please note that availability varies by city. Visit the Marketplace to learn more.
- Are trips insured?
Yes, driver-partners are covered by a contingent liability policy that works with their personal compulsory third party (CTP) injury cover to provide protection for all UberX, Uber Comfort, Uber Premium, UberXL and Assist trips.
This ensures that every trip is insured and that riders and other road users are protected if there is an accident.
- What if I have an issue with a rider?
Online support is available 24/7. Phone support is also available during select hours. If you encounter an incident with a rider, tap ‘help’ in the app to reach out to our support team.
Certain requirements and features vary by country, region and city.
