To drive with Uber, you'll need to have a private hire licence
Steps to get a private hire licence
Step 1 - Complete Driving Test
This test checks your driving ability, and is carried out by an approved third-party company on behalf of the council. Although it is not a DVSA test, it is very similar to the standard driving test completed by those getting their driving licence for the first time.
The driving test must be done before the knowledge test and the certificate is valid for 6 months.
Step 2 - Complete Vocational Qualification
Book your one-day taxi driver assessment through Tameside College. You will receive an NVQ Certificate which you will need to present at your Council appointment.
Step 3 - Complete DBS
Formerly known as a CRB check, this will need to be completed before you receive a Private Hire Licence. You will be given more information about how to complete this, at your appointment with Tameside Council. Your DBS will expire after 28 days if you don’t subscribe to the update service.
Step 4 - Submit Application
You must take all relevant documents, including the DVSA certificate and NVQ, with you and pay any fees as part of your application.
Your local knowledge test will also be booked at this appointment.
Step 5 - Get Medical Check
You need to complete a Group 2 Medical Check to demonstrate you are medically fit to drive. This can be completed by the applicant’s own GP or one who has access to your full medical history and records.
Prices vary by practice. Details of this will be provided at your appointment with Tameside Council. They will provide you with the medical form.
Step 6 - Collect Your Badge
Collect your badge in person when instructed by the licensing team.
The time and costs required to obtain a licence vary by council, as shown by the estimates set out above.
