Drive with Uber in Adelaide


Does your vehicle qualify to drive with Uber? Most 4-door cars do, but requirements vary depending on the vehicle option you choose. If you don’t own a car, we may be able to connect you with a vehicle solutions provider.

Uber's minimum requirements

All cars driving with Uber in Adelaide must be:

  • ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
  • In excellent working condition
  • No older than the maximum age for the Uber vehicle option chosen
  • A 4-door car or passenger van
  • No more than 12 seats, including the driver’s seat
  • Able to pass a vehicle inspection
  • Registered and CTP-insured in South Australia
  • Free from cosmetic damage (e.g. scuff marks, scratches and dents such as hail damage)
  • Free from commercial branding (e.g. graphics or wraps larger than 20cm by 20cm)

Other minimum requirements apply to specific vehicle options.

Insurance

All vehicles driving with Uber must be covered by compulsory third party (CTP) insurance, and have at least third party property damage insurance. To drive with UberX, you also need to be listed on the car’s property damage insurance policy, even if you’re not the vehicle owner or main policyholder.

These are the vehicle options and requirements in Adelaide.

UberX

Most newer cars qualify to drive with UberX, the most popular vehicle option for riders – an everyday ride at an affordable price.

UberX vehicles:

  • ANCAP 5-Star rated
  • Are in excellent working condition, with no cosmetic damage
  • Are registered and CTP-insured in South Australia
  • Are 8 years old or less (measured by the year of manufacture)
  • Have 4 doors
  • Seat 4-7 passengers plus the driver
  • Have working windows and air conditioning
  • Are able to pass a vehicle inspection
  • Are not taxis, ex-driving school, utes, government, 3-cylinder, branded or rebuilt vehicles

Some rental vehicles may be eligible to drive with UberX.

Assist

This option is designed to provide light physical assistance with getting in and out of the vehicle to people with different accessibility needs, including those living with disability, seniors, pregnant women, and people who are injured or unwell. Assist vehicles can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, and collapsible scooters. You’ll also need to complete a free, short disability awareness course.

Assist vehicles:

  • ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
  • Are in excellent working condition, with no cosmetic damage
  • Are considered easy to access for passengers
  • Are registered and CTP-insured in South Australia
  • Are 8 years old or less (measured by the year of manufacture)
  • Have 4 doors
  • Seat 4-7 passengers plus the driver
  • Have working windows and air conditioning
  • Are able to pass a vehicle inspection
  • Are not taxis, ex-driving school, utes, government, 3-cylinder, branded or rebuilt vehicles
  • Can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, collapsible scooters, and other assistive devices

For driver-partners to be eligible for Assist, they must:

  • Have completed at least 20 trips
  • Maintain a minimum rating of 4.85
  • Maintain a high standard of safety on the Uber app.
  • Complete a free, short disability awareness course (~15-20 minutes), which includes the Australian Network on Disability module. This training provides guidance on offering support, such as safely getting out of your vehicle to meet riders, helping them enter and exit the vehicle, and providing reliable kerb-to-kerb assistance.

Uber Eats

Uber Eats is a food delivery app that allows people to order food from their favourite local restaurants at the tap of a button. You can deliver with Uber Eats using your car, scooter or even your bicycle.

There are 3 ways to deliver with Uber Eats:

Bike requirements

  • You’re at least 18 years old
  • You can ride a bike around Adelaide
  • You can pass a bicycle safety test
  • You can pass a background check

Scooter/motorcycle requirements

  • You’re at least 18 years old
  • You hold a full Australian licence
  • Your scooter or motorcycle is a 1990 model or newer
  • Your scooter or motorcycle is registered and CTP-insured in South Australia
  • You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
  • You can pass a background check

Car requirements

  • You’re at least 18 years old
  • You hold a full Australian licence
  • Your car is a 1990 model or newer
  • Your car is registered and CTP-insured
  • You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
  • You can pass a background check
  • You can confirm that you have the right to work in Australia and that you have access to Medicare or relevant health insurance.
Uber Comfort

Vehicle requirements:

  • The vehicle must be manufactured within the last 7 years
  • The vehicle must be on the list of eligible vehicle models
  • Not be a taxi, ex-taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle
  • Vehicles must also meet all other UberX vehicle requirements


Driver-partner requirements:

  • Have completed at least 20 trips
  • Maintain a minimum rating of 4.85
  • 15% cancellation rate or lower
  • Driver-partners must meet all UberX requirements
UberXL

SUVs and vans can seat extra passengers, so that you can earn higher fares. This is the high-capacity version of UberX.

UberXL vehicles:

  • ANCAP 5-Star rated
  • Are in excellent working condition, with no cosmetic damage
  • Are registered and CTP-insured in South Australia
  • Are 8 years old or less (measured by the year of manufacture)
  • Are 4-door SUVs or large passenger vans
  • Seat 6-7 passengers plus the driver
  • Have working windows and air conditioning
  • Can pass a vehicle inspection
  • Are not taxis, ex-driving school, utes, government, 3-cylinder, branded or rebuilt vehicles

Some rental vehicles may be eligible to drive with UberXL.

Uber Black

Vehicle requirements:

  • The vehicle must have been manufactured within the last 7 years
  • The vehicle must be on the list of eligible vehicle models
  • Cannot be a taxi, ex-taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle
  • Vehicles must also meet all other UberX vehicle requirements


Driver-partner requirements:

  • Have completed at least 20 trips
  • Maintain a minimum rating of 4.85
  • 15% cancellation rate or lower
  • Completion of the Uber Black education module
  • Driver-partners must meet all UberX requirements
Uber Comfort Electric

Vehicle requirements:

  • The vehicle must be fully electric

  • The vehicle must be manufactured within the last 7 years

  • The vehicle must be on the list of eligible vehicle models

  • Not be a taxi, ex-taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle

  • Vehicles must also meet all other UberX vehicle requirements


Driver-partner requirements:

  • Have completed at least 20 trips
  • Maintain a minimum rating of 4.85
  • 15% cancellation rate or lower
  • Driver-partners must meet all UberX requirements
Uber Max

Uber Max is a minivan or people mover product which can comfortably seat 6 or 7 passengers with plenty of luggage space and rear sliding doors.

Vehicle requirements:

  • Zero emissions vehicles are eligible to complete Uber Electric trips
  • Vehicles must also meet all other UberX vehicle requirements


Driver-partner requirements:

  • Driver-partners must meet all UberX requirements
