Get a licence in Australia

State regulations in Victoria require rideshare drivers to hold a special type of licence called a driver accreditation, issued by Safe Transport Victoria (STV). Additionally, you’ll need to register the vehicle you plan to drive as a commercial passenger vehicle.

Regulatory requirements

  • 1. Get a driver accreditation (DA)

You’ll need to get driver accreditation through STV. STV requires applicants to complete a medical self-assessment as part of the application process. Click here for more information.

  • 2. Pass a vehicle inspection

STV requires all driver-partners to pass a vehicle inspection before they can start driving using the Uber app in Victoria. To get this, you can either book with Redbook Inspect, who provide an STV-approved inspection process, or you can book an inspection at any Licensed Vehicle Tester in Victoria to get a Roadworthy Certificate.

See locations of Licensed Vehicle Testers here or book with Redbook here.

  • 3. Register your vehicle as a commercial passenger vehicle

STV also requires all driver-partners to register every vehicle they plan to drive on the Uber platform as a commercial passenger vehicle. The application process includes filling out a form and paying a fee. Click here for more information.

How to upload your Driver Accreditation

Got your driver accreditation or driver accreditation approval email from STV? Follow these steps to upload it to your Uber profile.

  • What to upload

As proof of a current Victorian driver accreditation, Uber currently accepts either the driver accreditation certificate (left) or card (right).

  • How to upload it

    New driver-partners

If you’re new to Uber, make sure you’ve created a new driver-partner profile.

Then, upload your Driver Accreditation through the Uber app.

    Current driver-partners

If you’re a current driver-partner with an active profile, upload your Driver Accreditation in one of two ways:

What you need to do

  • Fill out the online form below to get started. The application process will include providing STV with identity documents, your driving history (if applicable), completing a medical self-assessment and paying a fee. When prompted in your application, select ‘Booked services’ as your service type.

There is a fee and it can take at least 20 business days for STV to approve your application. Once approved, upload your DA certificate on the Uber app.

  • Visit our Inspections page for more information on Inspections requirements and locations.

  • CPVV requires all driver-partners to register every vehicle they intend to drive using the Uber Driver app as commercial passenger vehicles.

If you are the owner of the vehicle you intend to use while driving using the Uber app fill out the online application link below to get started. You will be required to pay CPVV a $55.10 application fee to submit your registration and you will need to pay via credit card.

If you intend to rent a vehicle from the Uber Marketplace you will not be required to apply as this is provided by the Vehicle Solutions Provider.

    To apply, you’ll need:

    • Your vehicle details
    • Your Victorian driver accreditation number OR;
    • A copy of your Australian driver licence and passport (current, expired within last two years but not cancelled)
  • Drivers must clearly display either a Commercial Passenger Vehicle (CPV) sign or a sign identifying Uber on their vehicle. This sign must be placed on the front left of the windscreen facing outwards and be easily visible to anyone approaching the vehicle.

Order an Uber sticker through this website, allowing 5–7 days for delivery, or you can choose to print a copy of the Victorian commercial passenger vehicle signage to use as your sticker.

  • Driver-partners must be registered for GST and provide an Australian Business Number (ABN) to access the Uber app. If you haven’t already, you can register for GST through the Australian Tax Office (ATO) website.

You can provide your ABN details and confirm your GST registration in the ‘Invoice Settings’ section of your Partner Dashboard. Scroll down to fill in the field labelled ‘Australian Business Number (ABN)’, Company/Legal name, and confirm your GST registration.

  • In Victoria, you and Uber have certain legal obligations to ensure that every trip is safe and welcoming. To make sure you are aware of these obligations, you are required to complete driver safety education before you can start using the Uber Driver app. It should take less than 30 minutes to complete. You can complete the driver safety education course via logging into the Uber Driver app/website.

The safety education covers important topics such as avoiding discrimination, preventing sexual harassment, assisting riders with disability, vehicle maintenance and inspection, making sure you are fit to drive and general road safety.

  • All vehicles must have a 5-Star ANCAP rating or fall under our vehicle exemption policy to qualify for the Uber platform. Vehicles that do not meet our requirements will not be eligible to receive trip requests, and may be deleted from your account.

You can find out whether your vehicle has a 5-Star ANCAP rating at www.ancap.com.au.
