Victoria vehicle requirements

Does your vehicle qualify to drive with Uber? Most 4-door cars do, but requirements vary depending on the vehicle option you choose. If you don’t own a car, you can explore vehicle solutions options in the Marketplace.

Minimum requirements

All cars driving with Uber must be:

  • ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
  • In excellent working condition
  • No older than the maximum age for the Uber vehicle option chosen
  • A 4-door car or passenger van
  • No more than 12-seats, including the driver’s seat able to pass a RedBook Inspect vehicle inspection (more on inspections)
  • Registered in Victoria
  • Free from cosmetic damage (e.g. scuff marks, scratches and indentations such as hail damage)
  • Free from commercial branding (e.g. graphics or wraps greater than 20cm by 20cm) excl. taxi commercial branding
  • Registered as a commercial passenger vehicle (more on registration)
  • If a taxi: comply with all applicable local laws regarding vehicle requirements (e.g. livery, equipment, security cameras and tactile registration numbers)

Insurance requirements

All vehicles driving with Uber must be covered by compulsory third party (CTP) insurance, and have at least third-party property damage insurance. To drive with UberX, you also need to be listed on the car’s property damage insurance policy, even if you are not the vehicle owner or main policyholder.

Vehicle options available in Melbourne and their requirements. Includes Uber Eats.

Sign up to drive

  • Most newer cars qualify to drive with UberX, the most popular vehicle option for riders – an everyday ride at an affordable price.

    UberX vehicles must:

    • Be ANCAP 5-Star rated
    • Be no more than 15 years old (measured by the year of manufacture)
    • Seat 4 passengers plus the driver
    • Not be an ex-taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle
    • Be a 4-door car

    Some rental vehicles may be eligible to drive with UberX. Visit the Uber Marketplace to see available offers.

  • SUVs and vans can seat extra passengers, so that you can earn higher fares. This is the high-capacity version of UberX.

    • Be ANCAP 5-Star rated
    • Be 15 years old or newer (measured by the year of manufacture)
    • Be a 4-door SUV or large passenger van
    • Seat 6-7 passengers plus the driver
    • Not be an ex-taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle

  • This option is designed for riders living with disability, older adults or those who need an extra hand when getting from place to place. Assist vehicles can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers and collapsible scooters. You’ll also need to complete a free training course provided by Australian Network on Disability.

    Assist vehicles must:

    • Be ANCAP 5-Star rated
    • Be deemed easy to access for passengers
    • Be no more than 15 years old (measured by the year of manufacture)
    • Seat 4-7 passengers plus the driver
    • Not be an ex-taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle
    • Be able to accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, collapsible scooters and other assistive devices

    In order for driver-partners to be eligible for Assist, they must have

    • A 4.7 minimum rating; and
    • Have completed over 100 trips

    Some rental vehicles may be eligible to drive with Assist.

  • Uber Eats is a food delivery app that allows people to order food from their favourite local restaurants at the tap of a button. You can deliver with Uber Eats using your car, scooter or even your bicycle.

    There are 3 ways to deliver with Uber Eats:

    Bike requirements

    • You’re at least 18 years old
    • You can ride a bike around Melbourne
    • You can pass a bicycle safety test
    • You can pass a background check

    Scooter/motorcycle requirements

    • You’re at least 18 years old
    • You hold a full Australian licence
    • Your scooter or motorcycle is a 1990 model or newer
    • Your scooter or motorcycle is registered and CTP-insured in Victoria
    • You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
    • You can pass a background check

    Car requirements

    • You’re at least 18 years old
    • You hold a full Australian licence
    • Your car is a 1990 model or newer
    • Your car is registered and CTP-insured in Victoria
    • You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
    • You can pass a background check

    You'll also need to confirm that you have the right to work in Australia and that you have access to Medicare or relevant health insurance.

  • Uber Comfort is a ride option for driver-partners with the following requirements:

    • Not be an ex-taxi/taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle
    • Have completed at least 500 trips Maintain a minimum rating of 4.85
    • Drive a mid-sized vehicle with more passenger legroom*
    • A vehicle manufactured within the last 7 years (measured by the year of manufacture)

  • Offering premium rides with high-end cars.

    Uber Premier vehicles:

    • Are ANCAP 5-Star rated or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
    • Are in excellent working condition, with no cosmetic damage
    • Are registered and CTP-insured in VIC
    • Not be an ex-taxi/taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle
    • Are 7 years old or less (measured by the year of manufacture)
    • Are 4-door high-end vehicles
    • Comfortably seat 4 passengers plus the driver
    • Have working windows and air conditioning
    • If part of a fleet: have commercial vehicle insurance

    In order for driver-partners to be eligible for Uber Premier, they must have

  • Comfort Electric vehicles:

    • Only specific electric vehicles makes and models are approved for Comfort Electric trips
    • The vehicle is manufactured within the last 7 years
    • Meet all other UberX vehicle requirements

    In order for driver-partners to be eligible for Comfort Electric, they must have:

    • A 4.85 minimum rating; and
    • Have completed over 100 trips

  • Uber Max is for minivan or people mover vehicles:

    • Comfortably seat at least 7 passengers plus the driver
    • Have rear sliding doors
    • Have plenty of luggage space, without needing to put seats down
    • At least 3 rows of seating
    • Be no more than 15 years old (measured by the year of manufacture)

  • Local taxis on Uber, with access to transit lanes.

    Taxi vehicles must:

    • be ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
    • be a vehicle manufactured within the last 10 years
    • seat 4 passengers plus the driver
    • not be an ex-driving school, government or rebuilt vehicle
    • be a 4-door car
  • Uber Eats

    Uber Eats is a food delivery app that allows people to order food from their favourite restaurants at the tap of a button. If you are 18 years of age or older, you may be eligible to become a delivery partner with Uber Eats.
