Victoria vehicle requirements
Does your vehicle qualify to drive with Uber? Most 4-door cars do, but requirements vary depending on the vehicle option you choose. If you don’t own a car, you can explore vehicle solutions options in the Marketplace.
Minimum requirements
All cars using the Uber Driver app in Melbourne, regardless of vehicle option, must be:
- ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
- in excellent working condition
- no older than the maximum age for the Uber vehicle option chosen
- a 4-door car or passenger van
- no more than 8-seats, including the driver’s seat
- able to pass a RedBook Inspect vehicle inspection (more on inspections)
- registered in Victoria
- Free from cosmetic damage (e.g. scuff marks, scratches and indentations such as hail damage)
- Free from commercial branding (e.g. graphics or wraps greater than 20cm by 20cm)
- Registered as a commercial passenger vehicle (more on registration)

Insurance requirements
All vehicles driving with Uber must be covered by compulsory third party (CTP) insurance, and have at least third-party property damage insurance. To drive with UberX, you also need to be listed on the car’s property damage insurance policy, even if you are not the vehicle owner or main policyholder.

UberX
Most newer cars qualify to drive with UberX, the most popular vehicle option for riders - an everyday ride at an affordable price.
UberX vehicles must:
- be ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
- be no more than 12 years old
- seat 4 passengers plus the driver
- not be an ex-taxi/taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle
- be a 4-door car

UberXL
SUVs and vans can seat extra passengers, so that you can earn higher fares. This is the high-capacity version of UberX.
UberXL vehicles must:
- be ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
- be 12 years old or newer
- be a 4-door SUV or large passenger van
- seat 6-7 passengers plus the driver
- not be a taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle

Assist
This option is designed for riders living with disability, older adults, or those who need an extra hand when getting from place to place. Assist vehicles can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, and collapsible scooters. You’ll also need to complete a free training course provided by Australian Network on Disability.
Assist vehicles must:
- be ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
- be deemed easy to access for passengers
- be no more than 12 years old
- seat 4-7 passengers plus the driver
- not be a taxi, ex-driving school, government, branded or rebuilt vehicle
- be able to accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, collapsible scooters, and other assistive devices
In order for driver-partners to be eligible for Assist, they must have
- A 4.7 minimum rating; and
- Have completed over 100 trips
Some rental vehicles may be eligible to drive with Assist.
Uber Eats
Uber Eats is a food delivery app that allows people to order food from their favourite local restaurants at the tap of a button. You can deliver with Uber Eats using your car, scooter or even your bicycle.
There are 3 ways to deliver with Uber Eats:
Bike requirements
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You can ride a bike around Melbourne
- You can pass a bicycle safety test
- You can pass a background check
Scooter/motorcycle requirements
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You hold a full Australian licence
- Your scooter or motorcycle is a 1990 model or newer
- Your scooter or motorcycle is registered and CTP-insured in Victoria
- You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
- You can pass a background check
Car requirements
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You hold a full Australian licence
- Your car is a 1990 model or newer
- Your car is registered and CTP-insured in VIctoria
- You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
- You can pass a background check
You'll also need to confirm that you have the right to work in Australia and that you have access to Medicare or relevant health insurance.
Uber Comfort
Uber Comfort is a ride option for driver-partners who have completed over 500 trips, maintained a rating of 4.85 or above, and drive an eligible vehicle manufactured in 2013 or later.
Uber Premier
Offering premium rides with luxury cars.
Uber Premier vehicles:
- Are ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
- Are in excellent working condition, with no cosmetic damage
- Are registered and CTP-insured in NSW
- Are 6 years old or less
- Are 4-door luxury vehicles
- Comfortably seat 4 passengers plus the driver
- Have working windows and air conditioning
- If part of a fleet: have commercial vehicle insurance
In order for driver-partners to be eligible for Uber Premier, they must have
- A 4.6 minimum rating; and
- Have completed over 20 trips

UberEATS
