Frequently asked questions
- What does Uber do?
Uber is a rideshare service that helps you request a ride from one place to another. It connects people who need a ride with nearby driver partners using their own cars. You can request a ride through the Uber app or by phone. A driver partner will pick you up and take you where you need to go and charge the fare to your nominated cashless payment method
- What is the difference between Uber and Uber Eats?
Uber provides transportation services, while Uber Eats provides delivery services. Uber helps moves people from one place to another, and Uber Eats moves food and other items from local restaurants and stores to your door.
- What is the difference between Uber and a taxi?
Uber is a rideshare service that you request using a smartphone app or by phone; you can’t hail an Uber from the street like a taxi. While Uber driver partners typically use their private vehicles, all vehicles must meet Uber’s local safety, registration, and insurance requirements. (Note: In some cities, you can also request a taxi through the Uber app.)
- Why does Uber require access to my location?
Uber uses your location to help ensure accurate and efficient pick-ups. When location services are turned on, the app can detect your exact position – helping driver partners find you at the right address and on the correct side of the road. It also allows Uber to provide real-time trip tracking, fare estimates and safety features like sharing your trip with others.
- Will I receive phone calls from Uber?
You will not receive a phone call from Uber without your consent. To read the full privacy agreement, please go here.
- Can I pay cash for my trips with Uber?
Uber does not accept cash payments in Australia and New Zealand. All payments are processed through the Uber app to your nominated payment method. This means you do not pay the driver partner directly.
- Can I request an Uber ride on behalf of someone else?
Yes, you can request an Uber ride for someone else – even if they don’t have the Uber app. When booking a trip, simply enter their pickup location and destination. Before confirming the ride, you’ll have the option to indicate that the ride is for someone else (toggle the drop-down option that says For me).
- Can I use the government funding I receive for my transport on Uber?
If you are an Victorian residents receiving the MPTP (Multi Purpose Taxi Program) subsidy, please go here to get information about how you can use your subsidy with Uber.

- What happens if I have a problem during a ride?

After your trip, you can also report any concerns or provide feedback through the app’s Help section. Uber’s support team will review your report and respond as soon as possible to help resolve the issue.
