Drive with Uber in Newcastle
Does your vehicle qualify to drive with Uber? Most 4-door cars do, but requirements vary depending on the vehicle option you choose. If you don’t own a car, we may be able to connect you with a vehicle solutions provider.
Minimum requirements
All cars driving with Uber in Newcastle must be:
- In excellent working condition
- No older than the maximum age for the Uber vehicle option chosen
- A 4-door car or passenger van
- No more than 8-seaters, including the driver’s seat
- Able to pass a pink slip inspection
- Registered and CTP-insured in NSW
- Free from cosmetic damage and commercial branding
Other minimum rules apply to specific vehicle options.
Insurance
All vehicles driving with Uber must be covered by compulsory third party (CTP) insurance, and have at least third-party property damage insurance. To drive with UberX, you also need to be listed on the car’s property damage insurance policy, even if you are not the vehicle owner or main policyholder.
Newcastle vehicle options
These are the vehicle options and requirements in Newcastle.
- UberX
Most newer cars qualify to drive with UberX, the most popular vehicle option for riders - an everyday ride at an affordable price.
UberX vehicles:
- Are ANCAP 5-Star rated, or fall under our vehicle exemption policy
- Are in excellent working condition, with no cosmetic damage
- Are registered and CTP-insured in New South Wales
- Are 15 years old or less
- Have 4 doors
- Seat 4-7 passengers plus the driver
- Have working windows and air conditioning
- Are able to pass a pink slip inspection
- Are not taxis, ex-taxis, ex-driving school, government, branded, or rebuilt vehicles
Some rental vehicles may be eligible to drive with UberX.
- Assist
Down Small This option is designed for riders living with disability, older adults, or those who need an extra hand when getting from place to place. Assist vehicles can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, and collapsible scooters. You’ll also need to complete a free training course provided by Australian Network on Disability.
Assist vehicles:
- Are in excellent working condition, with no cosmetic damage
- Are deemed easy to access for passengers
- Are registered and CTP-insured in New South Wales
- Are 15 years old or less
- Have 4 doors
- Seat 4-7 passengers plus the driver
- Have working windows and air conditioning
- Are able to pass a pink slip inspection
- Are not taxis, ex-taxis, ex-driving school, government, branded, or rebuilt vehicles
- No pre-2010 Ford Falcons (or similar)
- Can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, collapsible scooters, and other assistive devices
In order for driver-partners to be eligible for Assist, they must have
- A 4.7 minimum rating; and
- Have completed over 100 trips
Some rental vehicles may be eligible to drive with Assist.
- UberWAV
Down Small Gives riders with roll-on wheelchair accessibility needs access to affordable and reliable rides at the touch of a button.

- Uber Eats
Down Small Uber Eats is a food delivery app that allows people to order food from their favourite local restaurants at the tap of a button. You can deliver with Uber Eats using your car, scooter or even your bicycle.
There are 3 ways to deliver with Uber Eats:
Bike requirements
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You can ride a bike around Newcastle
- You can pass a bicycle safety test
- You can pass a background check
Scooter/motorcycle requirements
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You hold a full Australian licence
- Your scooter or motorcycle is a 1990 model or newer
- Your scooter or motorcycle is registered and CTP-insured
- You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
- You can pass a background check
Car requirements
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You hold a full Australian licence
- Your car is a 1990 model or newer
- Your car is registered and CTP-insured
- You have vehicle insurance (third-party property or comprehensive)
- You can pass a background check
You'll also need to confirm that you have the right to work in Australia and that you have access to Medicare or relevant health insurance.
- UberXL
Down Small SUVs and vans can seat extra passengers, so that you can earn higher fares. This is the high-capacity version of UberX. UberXL vehicles:
- Are in excellent working condition, with no cosmetic damage
- Are registered and CTP-insured in NSW
- Are 15 years old or less
- Are 4-door SUVs or large passenger vans
- Seat 6-7 passengers plus the driver
- Have working windows and air conditioning
- Are able to pass a pink slip inspection
- Are not taxis, ex-taxis, government, ex-driving school, branded or rebuilt vehicles
Some rental vehicles may be eligible to drive with UberXL.
- Uber Comfort
Down Small Uber Comfort is a ride option for driver-partners with the following requirements:
- Have completed at least 500 trips
- Maintain a minimum rating of 4.85
- Drive a mid sized vehicle with more passenger legroom*
- A vehicle manufactured within the last 7 years.
*In most cases, legroom is 91 cm or more in the second row per manufacturer settings. Please check vehicle eligibility list.
