Why I Drive: Mothers + Daughters

Happy Mother’s Day from everyone at Uber San Francisco!

This weekend we’re celebrating the moms in our own lives, as well as the thousands of mothers who drive with Uber. With Uber, moms all over the Bay are working around their busy schedules to earn extra money for themselves and their families.

We talked to a few #UberMoms about how driving fits into their lives. We were inspired by them, and hope you will be too.

Meet Deborah

Deborah, from Hayward, drives to make extra money to support her teenage daughter, Angela. Right now she’s saving to help buy Angela a car.
“I approach Uber like it’s an adventure. I transport precious cargo — not freight — to its destination safely. And, in the process, I try to gain a nugget from each person I encounter. I try to leave them better than when they came in.”

Meet Guadalupe

Every morning before 5am, Guadalupe leaves her house in Oakland, crosses the Bay Bridge and drives south to Palo Alto. She likes to drive early for two reasons.

One reason is that she knows that many riders in Silicon Valley will be catching early flights. She can take a few travelers to the airport before traffic from the morning commute hits.

The second reason is that she’s a single mother, so she works around her kids’ schedules. Working a flexible schedule that she sets for herself allows her to take care of her kids while earning a living. She drives throughout the morning, right up to about 1:30pm, when she heads back to Oakland in time to pick up her kids.

“I worked at a store before, but the money was not enough — and I had two jobs. The problem with two jobs is that I have kids. There was no time for my kids.”
