Uber + IAVA: Proudly Partnering with Vets
There are over 1.5 million veterans in the tri-state area. We’re lucky to work with a number of these men and women who now earn their living as Uber partners.
Today, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of our partnership with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, to help put America’s vets back to work by driving with Uber.
As we celebrate the long weekend with our family and friends, enjoying roadtrips to the shore and picnics in Central Park, we’ll take a moment to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day with our partners at IAVA. For the third consecutive year, IAVA will lead our community in taking one moment out of the day to #GoSilent. Learn more about the #GoSilent campaign and how to support IAVA here.

I re-enlisted in the Army as a geospatial analyst after originally enlisting in 1992. After serving in Afghanistan I returned home. It was hard to find full time work. Eventually I began working as a private driver for a university. I had a lot of downtime to fill so I signed up to be an Uber partner. Immediately I was impressed by the technology. I liked that I was my own boss. When I was out in the field I had to figure out a lot on my own. Using the Uber app to navigate the city to pick up riders is not unlike the work I did as a geospatial analyst.

During my tenure in service I had the privilege to see the world, learn about other cultures, provide humanitarian relief, but most important serve with the best group of men and women on earth. The camaraderie and teamwork shared and bonds formed are incomparable to any other organization. I learned many traits including leadership, responsibility, discipline, and resilience among others, but three most salient are: honor, courage and commitment. Today, I still live by these same ethos in addition to continuing my service out of uniform by dedicating my efforts to assisting other fellow veterans and helping out the community.
