Married for 17 years, Elizabeth and Michael will be be spending Valentine’s Day their own way, making sure other couples can celebrate in style.

Don’t worry, they’ll be keeping in touch during Saturday’s busy hours, as both are picking up Uber riders in Sacramento.

“We’re usually on opposite schedules, but will FaceTime between pick-ups to catch up and tell stories from our day,” Elizabeth says.

The couple owns a transportation business and have worked together for years.

“Most couples I know say they cannot work together, but we’re different in that respect,” Michael says. “She tells me where I need to be, and keeps us in line… but we both take turns being the boss.”

“I’m better at it!” Elizabeth quips.

It’s easy to see how Michael and Elizabeth make it work, and have done so successfully for more than two decades. They complement each other perfectly. She punctuates Michael’s serious statements with sarcastic jokes. He points out that Elizabeth’s meticulous nature (she calls it stress) versus his laidback attitude helps balance things out.

Three years ago, Michael and Elizabeth started their own company, Destiny Transportation, providing rides throughout Northern California. About a year ago, they decided to branch out and partner with Uber.

Running a company, raising three kids and driving for a living makes it difficult to find time to connect with each other, but Michael and Elizabeth take full advantage of technology to stay in touch.

“All of our clients and stories are so different,” Elizabeth says.

It’s the stories they hear while driving — on Valentine’s Day and other times — that help keep the romance alive.

One day, they both drove members of a wedding party to the airport for a destination wedding. The bride and her family in Elizabeth’s car, and the groom and her family in Michael’s, conversation about love was inevitable. And when the wedding party returned to Sacramento? Michael and Elizabeth were able to pick them up.

“We actually get to ‘do life’ with a lot of our clients, and see that love blossoming,” says Michael. “It’s great for us, and wonderful to be a part of that relationship journey — if only for a half an hour on the way to the airport.”

And of course, this Valentine’s Day will offer plenty of opportunity to hear even more love stories, just like Christmas or New Year’s Eve. But neither is concerned about missing the lovers’ holiday themselves.

“That’s the best thing about this business. Major holidays may keep us apart and busy with work, but with the flexibility we have otherwise, we always find a way to make it up,” Michael says.

So how will they make it up this year? Having been together for so long, Elizabeth says they won’t do much to celebrate. But Michael, her perfect complement, gives a sly smile.

“Like I said, we always find a way to make it up.”
