Your guide to earning on Uber
You put in the hours. You deserve to understand every dollar. Here's a clear guide of how your earnings are calculated, how fares are set, and how to judge your earnings per hour to make every trip count.
How your earnings add up
Your earnings come down to 3 main things: fares, promotions, and tips. Depending on where you drive, your fare is calculated using either up-front fares or per-minute and per-mile fares.
Up-front fares
Your base fare covers estimated trip time and distance, distance to pickup, ride type, and real-time demand. You will see your estimated fare up front. If a trip takes longer than expected due to traffic or route changes, you could earn more. You’ll see your final fare after the trip ends.
Per-minute and per-mile fares
In areas without up-front pricing, your fare is calculated automatically based on 3 factors: base fare, time spent on the trip, and distance driven.
Promotions
You can find available promos, like Boost+ and Quests, in the Discover tab. Each one has its own requirements, with some needing you to make a choice or opt-in. When you meet the requirements, the extra earnings are added automatically.
Tips
Any tip you get from a rider is 100% yours, with that money added directly to your total earnings.
Why trip fares vary
No 2 trips are the same. Your fare is based on a number of things, including trip details like how far you’re driving, how long it takes, ride type, and other factors in your area.
Time and distance
Your fare covers time and mileage from the second you accept a request. That includes driving to the rider, waiting at the pickup, and the ride itself.
Ride types
Base fares take into account the type of ride. For example, options like Uber Comfort or UberXL carry a higher base fare than UberX.
Factors in your area
The fare also depends on what’s going on in your area, such as the number of ride requests, how many drivers are on the road, and how busy it is at the destination.
You can track the fare breakdown for every trip in the Earnings Hub in the Driver app.
A simple way to compare trip fares
Looking at your earnings in terms of active time and earnings per active hour puts every trip on a level playing field.
Understanding active time
Active time includes every minute spent completing a trip—driving to pickup, waiting for the rider, and the ride itself. It doesn’t include downtime between trips.
Earnings per active hour
This shows what you would earn if the trip took a full 60 minutes of active time.
For example: A trip that pays $10 and takes 30 minutes of active time (8 min. pickup + 2 min. wait + 10 min. ride) equals $30 per active hour.
Keep these 2 things in mind to help maximize your earnings: Earnings per trip (how much the trip pays) and trip volume (how often you accept trips and the wait time between them).
