3. Document requirements

The following are specific requirements for drivers on Uber Black that are in addition to the standard requirements for Toronto ridesharing drivers.

  • Limousine Plate: Valid Limousine Plate from an Ontario municipality. Ensure the limousine plate is attached to your vehicle before taking a photo, and that the photo also shows your Ontario-issued licence plate too. To obtain a limousine plate in the City of Toronto and other municipalities, you must hold commercial vehicle insurance with $2M of coverage for (i) loss or damage from bodily injury or death; (ii) loss or damage to property resulting from an accident; and (iii) third-party liability.
  • Vehicle Insurance: A valid insurance policy is required for Uber Black. Commercial vehicle insurance is required to obtain a municipal limousine plate in Ontario. Your name or the name of your limousine brokerage or limousine service company must be visible on the insurance document. When taking the picture, ensure that it is not blurry and that all four corners are visible.

In addition to the above Uber Black specific requirements, all ridesharing drivers must also go through the following standard requirements for PTC licensing.

  • Driver's Licence: 21+ years old, Ontario G Driver’s Licence or equivalent (G1 or G2 is not allowed). Make sure to avoid using flash so that your information is clear and readable.

    • If you're uploading an interim licence, please include a government-issued photo ID (e.g. previous driving license, passport etc.) in the same photo to verify your identity
    • Note this is separate from the Limousine Chauffeur Licence mentioned above.
  • Proof of Work Eligibility: Birth certificate, Citizenship card, Passport, Permanent Resident (PR) card, Work permit, Social Insurance Number card or letter, Study permit (if it declares the ability to work off-campus unrelated to program of study), Certificate of Indian Status, Canadian Forces Identification Card, Nexus card. Please submit a photo or the original document. Scanned copies are not accepted. Make sure to avoid using flash so that your information is clear and readable.

    • If you are uploading a work permit extension letter, upload the extension letter and your work permit in the same photo
    • If you are waiting for your renewed PR card, upload a photo of your current PR card and PR card extension letter
  • Vehicle Registration: Both sides (Vehicle portion and Plate portion) of the registration document are required. The vehicle must also be in good condition with no cosmetic damage, have 4 doors, and cannot be rebuilt or salvaged. You are not required to own the vehicle. When taking the picture, ensure that it is not blurry and that all four corners are visible.

  • Training Program: Per City of Toronto requirements, you must complete a training program by an accredited provider. Please see this page for a list of training providers. Uber will automatically submit you for municipal PTC licensing once you have uploaded all document and vehicle inspection requirements. You should receive your PTC licence within 5 business days.

    • While you are waiting for your PTC licence to be approved by the City, you can pick up riders in multiple areas of the GTA, including Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Vaughan, Barrie, Pickering, Ajax, and Oshawa.

4. Background screening

Drivers on Uber Black undergo the same screening processes as Toronto ridesharing drivers: a Motor Vehicle Record Check, and a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check.

Once your Driver's License, Vehicle Inspection, and Profile Photo are approved on your profile, you’ll receive an email from Triton, our preferred background screening provider. The email will contain a link to complete your two screenings. Search your inbox for an email from customerservice@tritoncanada.ca. Gather two pieces of ID to complete your screening online.

The screening will take approximately 3-5 business days to process and your results will be automatically uploaded to your profile. If you receive an error with your screening, contact ubersupport@tritoncanada.ca. Please note that if you choose to do your background screening through Triton, the cost will be charged back to you through deductions from your future fares. You can choose to obtain your own background screening (e.g., from your local police precinct) and upload it through the app.

In-person: To complete your background screening at a Greenlight Hub, make sure to bring 2 pieces of ID with you.

5. Vehicle inspection

Your vehicle must pass an inspection by a licensed mechanic to receive a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) each year. You must upload a photo of this document within 36 days of passing the inspection. When taking the picture, ensure that it is not blurry and that all four corners are visible.

6. Rating and trip requirements
