This Veterans Day, we’re proud to honor the service members and military spouses who are driver partners with Uber Raleigh-Durham. On Tuesday, November 11th, by selecting the vehicle option UberMILITARY, you’ll be driven by an uberX military spouse or veteran while also giving back to the military community. For every UberMILITARY ride, Uber will donate $1 to Hiring Our Heroes, a non-profit organization that helps veterans and military spouses transition to civilian life.

Today’s efforts are part of Uber’s long-term program, UberMILITARY, to introduce service members, veterans and military spouses to Uber and empower them as entrepreneurs and small business owners. Over the next 18 months, we will on-board 50,000 members of the military community to the Uber platform.

There are hundreds of service members partnering with Uber and moving riders around our city every day. We’d like to introduce you to a few of them.

Name: Michael S.
Military Service: United States Navy
Uber Partner Since: June, 2014
Michael was in the Navy. He was assigned to VF-211 and worked on the F-14 Tomcat (think Top Gun). He was an AT2(AW) and worked on the avionics on the jet. He did two cruises with that squadron, one on the USS John C. Stennis and the other on the USS Enterprise. He enjoyed it very much and loved all the ports he visited around the world. He also enjoyed learning about the different cultures from the many countries that he visited.

Why I Partner With Uber: “To continue to meet new people. I learn something new every [time] I drive a customer to their destination.”

Name: Audrey H.
Military Service: United States Army
Uber Partner Since: September, 2014
Audrey was in the Army for 7 years as a Human Resources specialist. She served in OIF 08-09 and OEF 12-13. She separated from the Army in April, 2014.

Why I Partner With Uber: “I love meeting new people and hearing a little about their background, but most importantly thinking about people’s safety is and will always be my main priority. In the Army, drinking and driving was a hot topic and as a leader we were responsible for the safety of our soldiers. I like the feeling that I saved another life by giving someone a ride home instead of allowing them to drive drunk.”

Name: Sherman N.
Military Service: United States Army
Uber Partner Since: October, 2014
Sherman really enjoyed his time in the Military, serving over 14 year’s in the US ARMY – it was the best decision he ever made. One of his most memorable experiences in the military was when he was stationed in Kuwait and had a mission to take out supplies into the field at night and had to travel through over 3 miles of land mines to get to his troops, but got there and back without any casualties. If he had to do it again, he would not hesitate!

Why I Partner With Uber: “Uber has been a great experience. It is a service that helps other to get from point a to b, it is a partnership that gives people like me and other Vets the opportunity to [earn] a living and continue to provide a service to our Nation. Thank you Uber.”

Name: Jerry W.
Military Service: United States Navy
Uber Partner Since: October, 2014
Jerry served 22 years of Military service in the United States Navy. During his service, he visited 32 countries around the world. He retired as a top ranking non-commission officer (E9).

Why I Partner With Uber: “I partner with Uber because [of] the respect they show to veterans. They also display professionalism and excellence.”

Glenn Purcell
Name: Glenn P.
Military Service: United States Army
Uber Partner Since: May, 2014
Glenn joined shortly after graduation from high school and made a career out of the Army. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East and stateside. He learned a trade, developed discipline and leadership skills, always had money in his pocket and made friends for life. He went from “Be All You Can Be” to “Uber On!”

Why I Partner With Uber: “I first heard about Uber during a tv news segment on their first day of business in Raleigh. I had just leased a new car and thought this would be a great way to pay for my car and have extra cash driving on weekends. I partner with Uber because many of my riders say riding in an Uber makes them feel special.

Name: David H.
Military Service: United States Navy
Uber Partner Since: July, 2014
David was in the US Navy from 1985 to 2006. He was classified as a Machinist mate First Class in which he would work in the engine room and auxiliary spaces of U.S. Navy Ships. They would carry Marines to various countries and/or locations to support whatever operations (Haiti, Somalia, Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm) that the Marines or US Navy may have been involved in.

Why I Partner With Uber: “I first partnered with Uber for a part time job. I still only work part time but I have found that it is an Honor to serve once again to be able to give riders a safe Uber experience of transporting them from one location to another and at the same time being part of their lives if only for the length of the trip.
