Here we are in August. Where has the summer gone? How did this happen? It’s easy to start dreading the change in seasons right when August hits, but let us all remember — we still have one more month! While we try to cram in all our beaching and weekend getaways, it’s also a good idea to take advantage of the occasional less-than-perfect summer weather and hit up NYC’s many museums.
This week we’re shining the spotlight on current exhibitions at iconic NYC museums. So hop in an Uber to escape the humidity and thunderstorms this weekend and enjoy some art and A/C.
Koons, Hopper, Calder | Whitney Museum

Do not miss the Jeff Koons: A Retrospective exhibit, currently showing at the Whitney. This extensive collection of Koons’s work will be the final exhibition at the museum before it moves to its new Meatpacking District location in 2015. In addition to Koons, the Whitney is also featuring work by Edward Hopper paired with contemporary photography that matches Hopper’s style of painting. Be sure to also save time to stroll through the Collecting Calder exhibit which is the largest collection of Alexander Calder’s work in the world. The Whitney is open Friday 1pm – 6pm and Saturday & Sunday 11am – 6pm.
Charles James: Beyond Fashion | The MET

There are less than two weeks left to go see the Costume Institute’s Charles James: Beyond Fashion exhibition at The MET. Walk through a maze of dramatic ball gowns by the famous designer who made a name for himself during the 40’s and 50’s with his glamorous, sculptured designs. In addition to the beautiful dresses themselves, visitors will find displays of James’s drawings, pattern pieces, scrapbooks, and jewelry. The MET is open Friday & Saturday 10am – 9pm and Sunday 10am – 5:30pm.
Jasper Johns & More | MOMA

MOMA’s Jasper Johns: Regrets showcases some of the artists most recent work including 10 drawings, two paintings, and two prints. The museum also currently has exhibitions by Brazilian abstract artist Lygia Clark, Germany’s Sigmar Polke (which ends Sunday, Aug 3), and another featuring the famous prints and posters by Toulouse-Lautrec. Leave yourself enough time to browse through it all, and then perhaps treat yourself to a beverage at The Modern bar room. The MOMA is open Friday 10:30am – 8pm and Saturday & Sunday 10:30am – 5:30pm.
Poisons & Sharks | Natural History Museum

Not feelin’ the art this weekend? Perhaps dangerous animals and insects are more your jam. Head on over to NYC’s Natural History Museum to check out the current Power of Poisons exhibit (ending Aug. 10) featuring all you need o know about both mythical and natural poison. You can also celebrate the new movie release of Sharknado 2 and upcoming Shark Week by catching the Great White Shark IMAX film. Pro tip: Don’t waste your time with 2D — 3D all the way. Go big or go home.
