Let Freedom Ride in NYC

Our NYC team has heard it time and time again: “I love your service, but need to able to request an SUV — what’s the deal?” Another popular refrain is “I love Uber, but it’s too pricey. When will you bring it to the masses?!” We’ve always had to say “coming soon!” Until today.

On July 4th, 2012, we’re singing a different tune. We’re giving you the freedom to choose your vehicle, and for the first time ever, you’ve got three options:

UberX

In New York, we’re rolling out livery vehicles at a lower price point than our standard black car service. Initially, UberX will be invite only. While we know this might feel too much like waiting in line at Shake Shack, we want to make sure we can provide an awesome Uber experience at every price point. As we increase our UberX supply, we’ll be rolling it out to more people. To get in on the UberX action, be sure to sign up for our waitlist.

Black

Black will remain our standard black car service: choose this option and either a high-end sedan or SUV will be curbside in minutes. Although you may end up getting a larger vehicle, we can only guarantee cars in this category will seat 4 people. Note: if you choose Black and an SUV picks you up, we won’t charge you SUV rates.

SUV

What so many of you have been waiting for: SUVs. These bad-ass cars can seat up to 6 people and tell the world just how baller you are; whether you’re rolling up to the club or bringing your whole family to the airport, you’ll be riding in style.

So, how’s this going to work?

To choose what type of vehicle you want, you’ll need to use either our iPhone or Android apps. At the top of the map, select the type of vehicle you want. Set your pickup location, hit request and boom, you’ll be able to watch an Uber coming towards you on your app. As usual, we’ll send you a text when your driver is on the way, and another when the driver has arrived.

We want to be really transparent about the new price points, so we’ve made it really easy to see the rates right from within the app: all you have to do is select the car types icon in the top right corner.

We’ve wanted this feature as long as you have, and we’re absolutely thrilled to bring it to you this summer. Happy 4th!
