Uber in San Francisco

Creating opportunity, expanding access, and investing in the city’s future

Every day, Uber works alongside drivers, couriers, local businesses, community organizations, and public partners to help strengthen neighborhoods, support economic growth, and make it easier for people to move through the city they call home.

Creating economic opportunity

For thousands of drivers and couriers across the Bay Area, Uber offers the opportunity to earn a living or supplement their income with the flexibility to choose when and how much they drive or deliver. Businesses also use the platform to reach more customers and simplify operations, helping them grow while supporting communities across San Francisco.

Helping San Franciscans access transportation

For more than a decade, Uber has made it easier for people across San Francisco to connect with transit, travel to healthcare appointments, commute to work, and get where they need to go throughout the city. As a complement to San Francisco’s transportation network, we’re helping make reliable transportation options more accessible for everyone, including those living in communities that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has identified as historically underserved.

Supporting local communities

Our commitment to San Francisco extends beyond our platform. Through partnerships with community organizations such as Gum Moon Women’s Residence, we provide Uber ride credits that help reduce transportation barriers for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, making it easier for them to access critical services and support.

Similarly, we provide ride credits to the Chinatown Community Development Center, Community Youth Center of San Francisco, Self-Help for the Elderly, Rafiki Coalition for Health and Wellness, and many other local organizations, helping families, older adults, and other vulnerable community members access healthcare, community events, meals, and other essential services.

We’ve also supported the Stronger Muni for All initiative, downtown revitalization efforts, and other initiatives that aim to strengthen the city as a whole.

Rooted in San Francisco

Uber was founded in San Francisco in 2009, and the city remains home to our global headquarters. Over the years, we grew our platform from offices across the city before moving to our current campus in Mission Bay, which opened in 2021. Designed with sustainability and employee well-being in mind, our LEED Gold– and WELL Platinum–certified offices open directly onto Thrive City, strengthening the connection between our campus and the surrounding community.

Driving a more sustainable future

Beyond our Mission Bay headquarters, which uses 100% renewable electricity and operates a building-wide greywater system, we’re helping drive sustainability throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area. In addition to investing in EV charging infrastructure, we’ve shared insights from our EV Infrastructure Estimator (EVIE) tool to help identify charging gaps and inform public-sector planning for a more equitable EV charging network.

We’re also working with Lucid and Nuro to advance autonomous electric mobility, with testing now underway in the San Francisco Bay Area to support the development of lower-emission transportation options for the region in 2026 and in the years ahead.
