If you decide to drive this winter, we’ve compiled a few tips to keep you safe during snowy drives and to be prepared this winter.

• Keep an emergency kit in your car

  This could include:

  • Kitty litter (helpful if your car gets stuck on ice)
  • Jumper cables
  • Chains
  • 2 pairs of gloves
  • An ice scraper
  • Boots
  • First aid kit
  • Blanket
  • Water

   

• Prevent rust from salt

  Before winter weather arrives, have a protective finish applied to your car and wax it. This will help prevent salt from sticking. In addition to that, it is recommended to wash your car every 10 days or so, including the undercarriage, to prevent salt build up.

• Keep your interior clean

  Rubber mats are a great way to save your car’s interior. Don’t want to splurge on them? Head to your local store and get waterproofing spray like Scotchgard and apply it to your car’s interior.

   

• Don’t forget your headlights

  Automatic headlights don’t always kick on, so it’s good to be sure to manually turn your headlights on during rain, snow, and foggy weather.

   

• Check your tires

  Cold weather changes the pressure in your tires. Check to make sure they’re properly filled and have good traction to stay safe on the road. If you drive in the cold and snow frequently, snow tires are a great idea.

   

• Mind the plows

  Plows and other snow removal equipment will be on the road throughout a storm. These vehicles drive slowly, so it’s recommended to leave at least 3 car lengths between you and them. Passing a plow can be dangerous, so exercise caution.
