As a Southie resident who works in downtown Boston, Russ doesn’t have far to go for his commute. The trouble was that, living far from a T stop, his commute options were limited. Russ had been using Uber for a few years but wasn’t able to justify the cost for his daily commute until he discovered POOL Pass.

The POOL Pass program began in April as a small Boston pilot program. With the most recent version of POOL Pass, riders can purchase a monthly pass to use on uberPOOL for an upfront flat rate (either $40 or $75 depending on the package) to lock in $.01 rides for the month.

Russ was lucky enough to be among a small group of riders who were offered the May POOL Pass beta test and he jumped at the opportunity to participate. He says that the first few weeks were a slight adjustment because he wasn’t used to sharing a car with others, but he quickly realized that uberPOOL was no different than sharing a ride on public transit.

“It is no different than hopping on the bus or the T with hundreds of strangers, except it is a car with only one or two other riders.”

His favorite part about the POOL Pass is that, although he is sharing with other riders, he is given “door-to-door convenience and avoids long wait times”.

The POOL Pass experience has even made Russ a convert to sharing rides, he has embraced it saying, “it’s always fun striking up conversation with people you don’t know – you never know who you’re going to meet!”
