Rideshare taxes could soon quadruple on many rides in Chicago

The City of Chicago has proposed the highest rideshare taxes in the country, which for some riders could result in a 300% increase in fees. Here are some facts about the City’s plan:

  • $1.25: The tax on all UberX trips, no matter if a trip goes from Englewood to North Lawndale or Lincoln Park to River North.
  • $3.00: The tax on most UberX trips that start or end downtown – more than quadruple the current tax.
  • More than 50% of all trips to or from the South and West Sides of Chicago will see a significant tax increase.
  • $0.00: New fees on taxis. Taxis are exempt from any fees, so riders in low-income communities, where taxis are less common, will have a harder time avoiding new rideshare taxes.

We believe there are more equitable ways to raise the revenue the city needs from transportation while not punishing rideshare passengers with limited access to mass transit or taxis.

Email your Alderman and tell them to stop this tax increase
