What to expect with cash deliveries in the Uber Driver app

Delivery Request

Before you accept a delivery request, your offer card will display a “Cash” badge so you know upfront that the delivery will be paid in cash.

Ending the Delivery & Collecting Payment

Once you’ve handed off the order at the dropoff location, tapping “Collect Payment” in the app will display the exact payment amount.

Fatih is set to pay $28.50, as shown on a digital payment collection screen.
Other Outcomes When Ending a Delivery (e.g., customer declines to tip, no payment was made, customer refuses to receive the delivery):

If there is an issue with payment or the order, you do not need to insist on payment. You will still receive your full earnings. You can also contact Support if needed.

Delivery Receipts & Earnings Balance

Once a delivery paid in cash is completed:

  • Your delivery receipt will show how much cash you received. This amount will appear as a negative payout since you’ve already collected it directly from the customer.
  • Because you collect cash directly from the customer, cash deliveries may show up as a negative amount in your Balance Summary. If you choose to accept cash deliveries, you understand and agree that your balance may become negative—even by more than you've earned on that trip—because some of the cash you collect is not your earnings. It also includes money that belongs to the restaurant (for the cost of the food) and fees the customer pays to Uber.
  • You authorize Uber to automatically recover any negative balance by deducting earnings from your future deliveries that are paid digitally. As you complete future digital deliveries, those earnings (including fares and tips) will be automatically applied to reduce and eventually clear your negative balance, since your digital wallet combines all incoming payouts into a single balance.
  • Cash deliveries may be paused if your negative balance gets too high.  To keep receiving cash requests, you can lower your balance at any time by completing deliveries paid with digital payments.
  • Any cash tips you receive are, as always, 100% yours to keep.
Earnings summary shows $17.30 earned this week, wallet balance at -$11.20, and no payouts in the last two weeks.
How to opt out

If you don’t want to accept cash delivery trips, you can opt out anytime in Preferences. You can opt back in whenever you like.

Here are some commonly asked questions about handling cash:

Do I need to carry exact change?

You are not required to carry change, although having small bills may help make deliveries go more smoothly.

Can customers pay tips on cash deliveries?

Yes. When they place their order, customers can choose to indicate in the app that they will be providing a cash tip at delivery.  Customers can also provide a cash tip at delivery even if they didn’t indicate their desire to tip when they first placed their order. You always keep 100% of the tips you earn.

What should I do if the customer pays more for the order and I do not have exact change?

If neither you nor the customer has exact change, don’t worry. The app will provide information for how to proceed.

If the app prompts you to record the cash paid by the customer, you'll enter the amount in the app, and any extra will be refunded to the customer in Uber Cash.

For orders that the customer made through the store's own website (not on Uber Eats), the customer is ineligible to receive Uber Cash as change. In these cases, you can deliver food to the customer without taking any cash and contact Support.

What do I do if the customer doesn’t have enough cash to pay for the order?

You will receive the full delivery fare even if the customer does not have enough cash to pay in full. If the app prompts you to record the cash paid by the customer, enter the amount actually received (enter "0" if no cash was collected). You will still receive your earnings for the trip and will not be responsible for any unpaid amount associated with the order. You can contact Support if additional assistance is needed.

Are there any extra fees or deductions?

No. There are no additional fees for cash orders.

If a customer uses a promotion, discount, or Uber Credits, you may collect less cash—or even no cash at all—at drop-off. That's expected. Your earnings for the delivery aren't reduced because the customer used a promotion. Uber covers the value of eligible promotions, so you'll still receive your earnings for the delivery.

What happens if I forget to collect the cash payment from the customer?

If you forget to collect the cash payment, contact Support as soon as possible. They will help to prevent the order from being incorrectly treated as an underpayment.

The customer wants me to leave the order at the door and doesn't want to meet me. What should I do?

Cash orders require you to collect payment from the customer. If the customer doesn't meet you or you're unable to collect the cash payment, complete the delivery. If the app prompts you to record the cash paid by the customer, enter “$0” as the amount received in the Driver app.  You can contact Support if additional assistance is needed.

Can the customer switch their payment method at drop-off?

No. The payment method selected when the order was placed can't be changed at drop-off. If the order was placed as a cash order, the customer will need to provide you with cash in order to pay for the delivery. If they do not provide cash, complete the delivery and the app will provide guidance on the next steps.

What safety tips should I keep in mind for cash deliveries?

Cash deliveries can involve unique situations, so it may help to keep a few simple safety tips in mind.

  • Consider keeping cash in a secure place where customers and others are less likely to see it. Carrying only a small amount of change and making deposits regularly, when possible, may also help reduce the amount of cash on hand.
  • If there's a payment issue, it may be best to avoid disputing or insisting on payment. You can complete the delivery, enter the amount you received in the Uber app, and Uber can review the payment.
  • Trust your instincts. If you ever feel unsafe, consider leaving the situation if possible and using the in-app Safety Toolkit, including live help with a Safety Agent, or contacting local emergency services if needed.
  • You can also visit the Learning Center in the Driver app for additional safety tips and best practices.

What do I do if I have questions or need assistance?

At any point during the delivery, you can tap the “Contact Support” button to get help or answers to any questions you may have.  You can report any safety incident 24/7 through the app or by calling the Safety Incident Reporting Line.
