Supporting Maui: Helping Neighbors in Need
Written byThe wildfires that swept through the beautiful island of Maui have left a trail of devastation—consuming homes, destroying businesses, and displacing families. Even in this time of crisis, the aloha spirit that defines Hawaiian culture continues to shine through.
Maui fire victims face a tough road ahead as they seek to rebuild their lives. Today, we are announcing a series of new initiatives to support those affected by this terrible tragedy:
- Humanitarian aid: Uber is donating $500,000 to the Hawai’i Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund. And starting today, we will launch an in-app donation button to allow Uber and Uber Eats customers in the US to make donations to the non-profit. To maximize your generosity, Uber will match the first $500,000 raised – committing up to $1 million to the Hawai’i Community Foundation*.
- Free rides to or from shelters: Our priority is to ensure that transportation is not a barrier to evacuees receiving help or to volunteers offering their assistance. Uber is now partnering with the American Red Cross to provide free rides (up to $40) to people going to or from temporary shelters or in hotels who do not have transportation options. To redeem the discount, riders must apply the promo code “MAUI23” in the Wallet section of their Uber app prior to requesting the ride, which is valid for UberX or UberXL**.
- Support for drivers: For active drivers in Lahaina, we will be providing financial support for immediate needs, and we are continuing to explore opportunities to help Uber drivers and couriers as Maui moves towards a recovery.
Our team is committed to looking for more ways to help those impacted by these devastating wildfires. Together, we can help rebuild and restore the Maui community.
