A fresh start
in Florida

Thanks to support from our driver-partners and riders, statewide ridesharing legislation was passed this spring. This means that Uber is now available everywhere in Florida, and will grant expanded access to safe, reliable transportation across the state.

The new law will help create more earning opportunities and improve mobility options for Floridians. Simply put, though, this means that riders can get a safe, reliable ride anywhere in the state, at any time—from Jacksonville to Key West. For driver-partners, it means they can go online in their hometown or while on vacation at the beach and earn on their terms.

This is just the beginning. We are dedicated to increasing mobility options for people and cities alike. Now that this statewide legislation is in effect, we can continue to do that for the millions of Florida residents and visitors. We’re so excited about what’s to come in Florida.

Moving
Florida

Nearly 3 years ago, we arrived in the Sunshine State, and it’s been an incredible journey ever since. From developing unique transportation solutions for those who don’t drive or own a vehicle to curbing drunk driving, we’re working hand in hand with cities to achieve success together.

Today, more than 36 states have passed statewide regulations for ridesharing—and when you look at how people are using these platforms, it’s clear that ridesharing is an opportunity to be seized rather than a problem to be solved.

Florida cannot go another year without creating a permanent home for ridesharing. We look forward to engaging with forward-thinking leaders to pass statewide ridesharing legislation this year and open better ways for Florida to move, work, and thrive.

Uber is focused on keeping people and cities moving, no matter what. We’ve facilitated millions of safe, reliable rides to Floridians and visitors across the state, and generated significant economic activity through the people who drive and ride with Uber every day.

And we’re just getting started. In a few short years, we’ve:

  • Improved transportation safety for thousands of Floridians
  • Worked with local governments, businesses, and community organizations to enhance mobility
  • Created new opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs, and much more!

Take a look below at some of our favorite milestones, partnerships, and events since arriving in Florida. But imagine what we could accomplish together if Uber had a permanent home in the Sunshine State. It’s time to pass statewide ridesharing legislation and keep moving Florida.

Enhancing
mobility

In partnership with local governments and transit agencies, we provide discounted rides in several Florida cities as a complement to public transit. Hundreds of thousands of Floridians commute using the bus or rail, but getting to and from the stops without owning a car or paying for parking can be challenging—and expensive. We’re here to help create innovative transit solutions.

"Uber’s groundbreaking approach has changed the way that millions of people get where they need to go."
— Altamonte Springs city manager Frank Martz

In March 2016, we worked with the city of Altamonte Springs to launch a first-of-its-kind transit program. Every Uber trip taken that begins and ends within city limits is 20% off. No ifs, ands, or buts—the Uber rider gets a discounted price, and Altamonte Springs pays the difference.

Age-friendly communities

Our goal is to help communities rethink transportation options across all generations. From showing future riders how to use Uber to guiding potential drivers through the onboarding process, our partnerships help connect people of all ages with the resources they need to unlock new possibilities.

Many seniors don’t have a smartphone or know how to use Uber. So, in collaboration with the City of Gainesville, ElderCare of Alachua County, and the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce, we launched Freedom in Motion, a program that educates seniors on how to use Uber and supplies a phone if they don’t have one. Plus, it provides on-demand subsidized transportation for residents of 2 Gainesville senior communities.

Opportunity
for all

Since that first trip in Florida, we’ve enabled hundreds of thousands of Floridians to earn on their own terms. Whether it’s the single mom driving to save money for her children’s school tuition, the retired veteran on the road to meet new people, or someone between jobs driving to support their family, our driver-partners use Uber to achieve their goals—turning car payments into paychecks.

Uber offers something unique—work on demand, whenever you want it—which is especially desirable to women who juggle work and family. It’s one of the reasons why we committed last year to get 1 million women driving with Uber by 2020. We celebrated International Women’s Day 2016 by partnering with the YWCA of Miami-Dade to bring that commitment to life locally with Drive to Thrive, a program aimed at bringing more women drivers onto the platform.

Driving restaurant earnings

In the last year, we’ve introduced UberEATS—an app that makes getting great food as easy as requesting a ride—to Florida. Our food delivery service offers selections from hundreds of local restaurants at the touch of a button delivered curbside.

Safer roads

Uber driver-partners have provided more than 24 million safe rides throughout the Sunshine State in the last year alone. Not only is safety built into every trip through our cutting-edge technology, but we are also committed to providing a safe alternative to driving under the influence.

"Ridesharing has a significant impact on communities by connecting them with a safe and reliable alternative to getting behind the wheel after a night out."
— Linda Unfried, cofounder of Hillsborough County MADD

In partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), we’ve raised more than $40,000 to help eliminate drunk driving in Florida, led a pledge to reduce drunk driving during the holiday season, and held several events in partnership with Florida police departments focusing on DUI prevention and safe driving alternatives.

Student safe rides

We want to enhance the college experience for students at Florida’s universities and colleges and be there for them when they need a safe ride home. From sponsoring student fundraisers and DUI awareness forums to enlisting students as Brand Ambassadors, we have become part of the campus communities and gotten to know some of Florida’s best and brightest students.

We’ve also partnered with universities to create Safe Rides programs, where students can request an Uber ride home that their university subsidizes—no questions asked. The University of Florida had the first Safe Rides program in the country.

Building a
healthy future

One of the biggest hurdles in access to health care is being able to get to a medical facility. For those who don’t drive or own their own car, getting to a doctor’s appointment can seem impossible. It’s our goal to connect Florida residents with the medical attention they need.

For example, for the past 2 years, we’ve had Uber for Health Day, our on-demand flu-fighting campaign. Instead of having to go to a medical facility to get what they need for flu season, Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa residents had the ability to request a complimentary flu-fighting care package—including the option to receive a flu shot—by tapping a button in the app.

Impact & relief

Our core business revolves around connecting drivers with those who need a ride, but whenever possible, we try to connect resources with those in need. We’re always looking for ways to make a positive impact in the community.

In 2015, we worked with Volunteer Florida to facilitate an on-demand clothing drive for local job-seekers in Tallahassee. Uber drivers received requests for donations of professional attire and picked up more than 4,000 donations.

In the face of some unbelievable and unspeakable tragedies, our team mobilized to help the community in times when resources are most needed.

For example, when it became apparent that Hurricane Matthew would cause destruction across Northwest Florida, we sprang into action. Working with our partners, we organized a volunteer registration, implemented a text-to-donate campaign for the First Coast Relief Fund, and donated rides to United Way and senior citizens in need.

Going the
distance

Part of what makes Florida unique is its awesome sports teams—and the fans who support them. We love cheering on Florida’s teams and celebrating their wins, and getting fans—and the athletes—to and from the games. Whether we are facilitating rides to sports bars for game-watching, coordinating pickup locations at stadiums, or gifting top-rated drivers tickets to games, we love being part of the experience!

Our first-of-its-kind NFL partnership with the Miami Dolphins gave Uber riders exclusive access to a pickup/drop-off zone, making getting to and from games easier than ever. Plus, UberTAILGATE lets riders request an Uber to a Dolphins game where a tailgate—cooler and tent included—is waiting.

Your ride to a good time, anytime

Florida hosts hundreds of events yearly that bring excitement, fun, and opportunities to cities across the state, and our team works with local partners to facilitate transportation at these events. We strive to create a magical experience for riders and encourage Floridians and visitors alike to take part in everything the state has to offer!

Multi-day events—like music festivals and conferences—bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to Florida. Many take planes or trains to get here, so without their own vehicles, they rely on Uber to get around safely and affordably.
