Getting Huskers home: How the University of Nebraska–Lincoln partners with Uber to provide late-night rides
When the sun sets on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s sprawling campus, students shouldn’t have to worry about getting home without stress.
Thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between The Association of Students of the University of Nebraska (ASUN) and Uber, Huskers can rest easy knowing they have a lift home.
In 2025, ASUN began providing late-night journeys for its students with Uber, with the primary aim of promoting safety for its campus community. This innovative programme, funded through a unique source, is already making a significant impact on a community of over 23,000 students.
Let’s take a closer look at our partnership.
How it began
The challenge was clear: undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) needed reliable late-night transport during the academic year.
Whether attending late-night study sessions, heading back from evenings out with friends, or rushing to make early-morning flights, Huskers needed to be able to travel safely at night.
Recognising the gap in campus transport offerings, ASUN Student Government stepped up to find a flexible, student-centred solution.
About the programme
In 2026, ASUN launched the Husker Late Night Ride programme in partnership with Uber, designed to get Huskers home stress-free and promote campus safety.
The programme offers students 5 $10 Uber vouchers per term, for use on UberX rides. These vouchers can be used between 9pm and 3am, 7 days a week.
To be eligible for the subsidy, rides must start and finish within a 3-mile radius of UNL’s City and East campuses, or travel to and from Lincoln Airport.
Tap, tap, ride
Using the Husker Late Night Ride programme is straightforward. Students register through a form and receive vouchers via their official UNL email. They can then follow a link to add the voucher to their Uber account. When requesting a ride within the programme’s eligible time frame and zones, vouchers are applied automatically.
Supported by Husker spirit
Proof that Husker spirit is powerful? The Husker Late Night Ride programme is backed by it.
The programme is funded by capital from Nebraska Athletics, specifically revenue generated from alcohol sales at Husker football and volleyball matches. Thanks to creative budgeting by the ASUN student government, game-day celebrations have been channelled into a year-round resource for UNL students that supports campus safety.
Making waves
Since its launch, the Husker Late Night Ride programme has become a campus favourite, woven into the fabric of UNL student life.
Over 6,000 students have claimed a Husker Late Night Ride voucher, and more than 15,200 rides with Uber have been completed. Peak usage occurs Thursday through Saturday nights, with Friday being the most popular at 37.8% of all rides.
What’s more, Uber’s pay-per-performance model makes it simple for ASUN to deliver all this impact while keeping cost-efficiency front of mind.
Through the Uber for Business Dashboard, ASUN maintains full oversight of the programme as it continues to grow. Administrators are able to easily track impact and spending, adjust programme parameters, and generate reports seamlessly.
A model for partnership
More than just a lift home, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s partnership with Uber shows what’s possible when student leadership, creative funding, and innovative technology come together. Huskers look out for Huskers—and now, they can rely on a stress-free journey home, whatever the hour, helping to promote a safer campus environment.
