Adjusting Fares and Boost in London, Manchester, and Birmingham

Over the summer, we spoke with hundreds of delivery partners across the UK to learn first-hand how we could improve the experience on our app.

One thing we talked about was Boost. We introduced Boost in 2017 following discussions with delivery partners about how we could improve their payments. Boost was seen as a simpler way to help partners make more money per delivery when and where demand for food delivery was expected to be high.

But during our sessions, we heard from partners that Boost isn’t helping them make more money the way it’s supposed to - multipliers are too low and not available in enough places. Essentially, it needs to be improved. In response to this feedback, we’ve decided to update our fare structure and Boost in London, Manchester, and Birmingham.

We believe the new structure and Boost will improve earning potential during mealtimes in busy areas and help partners make the most from their time on the app. It will also help ensure our app is the most attractive option for partners at the busiest times for food delivery.

We found that Boost isn’t helping partners make more money

Boost is supposed to signal the best times and places to deliver, so partners can go online and make the most money. But we were told that’s not happening. From our roundtables, we heard:

  • Boost is too rare across much of London, Birmingham, and Manchester
  • When it is available, it’s offered at too low a multiplier
  • Partners are not seeing a difference in Boost during busy periods and quiet periods

So we’re introducing a new fare structure and improved Boost

Starting 19 September, we’re going to increase Boost and make it available in more parts of the city. These higher Boost multipliers will appear during busy mealtimes, when the most orders are happening and restaurants are in the most need of your service.

Pick-up, Drop-off, and Per mile fees in London, Manchester, and Birmingham

In order to offer higher Boost multipliers, we need to update our fare structure. On 19 September, the following fees per delivery will go into effect:

  • Pick-up fee - £1.10
  • Drop-off fee - £1.40
  • Per mile fee - £1.50

The new minimum fare is £3.50.

What this means for partner payments

With the new fares and planned Boost multipliers, earning potential is expected to be higher during busy periods and areas than it is today.

With the new fees, this also means that payments may be lower outside of typical mealtimes or in quieter areas, when there are fewer orders waiting to be picked up. It makes sense that more money is available to be made during mealtimes and busy areas, something we’ve heard partners recognise, and is reflected in these changes. We recommend partners check for Boost in the partner app before going online. That's the best indication of when and where we expect to see demand for food delivery.

Minimum Payment Guarantee

We’re confident in these changes, and we want partners to be too. To help partners get used to the new structure, we’re introducing a 6-week minimum payment guarantee during busy hours. If partners don’t make at least the amounts listed, we’ll top them up.

Between 19 September and 4 November, you’ll be guaranteed the following amounts per hour, after Uber’s service fee.

Monday - Thursday from 12pm - 2pm and 6pm - 10pm - £9p/h.

Friday - Saturday from 12pm - 2pm - £9 p/h

Friday - Saturday from 6pm - 10pm - £10 p/h

Sunday from 8am - 6pm - £9 p/h

Sunday from 6pm - 7pm - £10 p/h

Sunday from 7pm - 9pm - £11 p/h

Sunday from 9pm - 10pm - £10 p/h

To receive a minimum payment guarantee per hour, for every hour a partner spends online during an incentive period, they need to 1) confirm at least 80% of delivery requests received by them; and 2) complete at least one delivery. Of course, partners are entirely free to choose if, when and where to go online and whether or not they want to participate in this incentive. Read more in the FAQs below.

Earnings Advice Sessions

Earnings Advice Sessions will be available to all partners, where our Experts will provide tips on how to maximise time spent on the app given the new fee structure. Delivery Partners can be on the lookout for more information on how to schedule an appointment in the coming weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why make the change?

Our goal is to be the most attractive option for delivery partners during the busiest times and areas for food delivery. To do this, we need to change the way Boost works.

    • Busy times and areas will be better shown in the app with higher Boost multipliers
    • Off-peak hours (outside mealtimes) and quieter areas will have lower Boost because we tend to see fewer orders come through the app and restaurants are less in need of delivery partners. This could mean lower payments during quiet times or quiet areas than received today
  • What will be the impact on my earnings?

    • Overall, we expect better earnings for partners by having more competitive payments at busy times and reducing wasted time online during hours with fewer orders and lower earning potential. Better visibility of demand with Boost will help you figure out when and where most orders are happening
    • Temporary Minimum Payment Guarantees (MPG) will be in place at busy times to ensure you make at least as much as today during these times
  • You're offering higher Boost but reducing the fees! How will this lead to better earnings?

While the minimum fees have been reduced, we've also increased Boost multipliers and made it available in more parts of the city during busy mealtimes. We believe this will allow you to make better earnings when restaurants have the greatest need for your service, and make the most out of your time spent on the app.

We'll also be hosting Earnings Advice Sessions, where our Experts will provide tips on how to maximise your time online. Be on the lookout for more information on how to sign up for one of those sessions.

  • How do I qualify for the temporary Minimum Payment Guarantee (MPG)?

To receive a minimum payment guarantee per hour (after Uber’s service fee) as indicated in the table, for every hour you spend online during an incentive period, you need to 1) confirm at least 80% of delivery requests received by you; and 2) complete at least one delivery. An “incentive period” is any block of hours where a minimum payment guarantee applies as indicated in the table below. As always, you’re under no obligation to go online. For any hours your net fees exceed the minimum payment guarantee for that hour, no guarantee will apply. Uber will calculate your eligible hours, and you will automatically be paid any guarantee on a weekly basis. The temporary minimum payment guarantee incentive will be available from 19 September to 4 November (inclusive), except in extreme circumstances determined by Uber at its sole discretion. We reserve the right to withhold or deduct payments that we determine or believe were in error, fraudulent, illegal, or in violation of partner terms or these terms. Terms subject to change. Of course, you are entirely free to choose if, when and where to go online and whether or not you want to participate in this incentive. See the amounts here.

  • How long will these hourly guarantees last?

We're adding temporary hourly guarantees from 19 September to 4 November, to help you get used to the new fee structure.

  • How does Boost work?

With Boost, multipliers can be applied to your fee at busy times in specific areas. The busier the pickup area is expected to be, the higher the Boost. This means you will make more money per delivery when and where demand is expected to be high, and you will see the Boost applied to your fees in real time. Read more.
