Vehicle requirements in Canada

Which car is right for you? Make sure it meets Uber car requirements in your city and remember that you’ll make more money if you keep your costs low.

Your vehicle must-haves

To drive with Uber in the Greater Toronto Area, your vehicle must meet these minimum requirements:

  • 4-door vehicle with independently opening doors
  • Good condition with no cosmetic damage
  • No commercial branding
  • No salvaged or rebuilt vehicles
  • Snow tires or all-weather tires installed from December 1 until April 30 the following year (Only required for PTC licensed drivers in the City of Toronto and City of Mississauga)
  • Pass a vehicle inspection by a licensed mechanic

There are many ways to drive with Uber. See all of the options below and find out which ones your vehicle qualifies for.

Vehicle model year

City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton: Your vehicle's model year must be 7 years or newer to drive with UberX, and UberXL in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton.

Greater Toronto Area (GTA): If your vehicle's model year is 8 to 10 years or newer, you can still drive in large areas of the GTA, including the regions of Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, King City, Markham, Stouffville, and Newmarket.

Note that if your vehicle age is 8 years or older, you will not be able to pick up riders in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and City of Brampton.

Uber Eats: If your vehicle's model year is 20 years or newer, it qualifies to deliver food with Uber Eats. Check out the details below.

Registration

Uber accepts both official and temporary registration documents. The vehicle does not need to be registered in your name to qualify.

If your vehicle is 7 years or newer, it must be registered in Ontario to enable pickups in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton. For out-of-province registrations, you will be able to do pickups in the GTA but not in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton.

Insurance

Ontario has approved an insurance policy from Intact Insurance designed specifically for ridesharing. Drivers are still required to maintain a personal insurance policy.

You can remove it when you decide to go offline and save it for the next time. Pro tip: keep the paper it comes with to place your sticker on when not in use.

'Look before opening door’ decal

By law, you must display this decal on the right and left rear passenger door windows of your vehicle. This decal is intended to help keep riders and cyclists safe and serve as friendly reminder to look for bikes before opening the vehicle door.

‘Notice of recording’ decal Only display this decal if you have a device that can record audio and/or video footage of the passenger. If you do, then by law you must display this decal on the right and left passenger rear door windows of your vehicle.
