How WAV and UberX differ
WAV
- Requires a vehicle capable of loading and securing passengers using motorized wheelchairs
- Drivers are required to take an approved WAV course
- Drivers can receive UberX and WAV trip requests (no UberPool or UberXL)
- Since WAV riders may require assistance and need to be secured, trips can be longer
UberX
- 4-door vehicle
- Drivers do not require any additional course
- Drivers can receive UberX and UberPool trips
- UberX riders typically require minimal or no driver assistance
How to drive with Uber WAV
To be eligible to receive trip requests for Uber WAV, you will need to meet the criteria below
Eligibility
- Meet the driver requirements in Toronto
- Vehicle fitted to carry at least one person in a wheelchair
- Have a wheelchair access ramp or a platform lift
- Safety belts for each wheelchair, consisting of a shoulder belt and a lap belt
- A restraining device to keep each wheelchair in place (must have 4 anchorage points)
Vehicle Inspection
Accessible vehicles are required to have the Semi-Annual Inspection Certificate & Safety Standards Certificate to complete ridehailing trips in the City of Toronto - which is different than the standard Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) document required for non-accessible vehicles.
Complete an accessibility training course or refresher
In the City of Toronto, all drivers must have an "accessible endorsement" on their City of Toronto vehicle-for-hire (VfH) license as a licensing requirement to operate. To obtain this endorsement, service providers are required to complete a training course or refresher that focuses on the development of knowledge, skills, and abilities in serving the accessible community.
Accessibility training course
The City has developed criteria to recognize accessible training programs delivered through third-party providers (educational institutions, municipal organizations, public or non-profit training organizations and licensed taxicab brokerages) for Accessible Endorsements on Vehicle-for-Hire Driver licenses. Approved training providers can be found on the City of Toronto website under the “Accessible Driver Training” section.
Accessibility training refresher
Existing Vehicle-for-Hire Drivers who currently hold valid accessible endorsements require a refresher with the City of Toronto every four years.

UberWAV Vehicle Requirements
- The entrance of the wheelchair must be on the side of the vehicle
- Removed middle seats
- Wheelchair positioning must be in the middle lane. J-hooks for the seating must be in the middle of the vehicle, between the driver seat and the passenger seat
- Meet minimum vehicle requirements in Toronto
