J.B. Hunt taps Uber to enable driver transportation

J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc. is a transportation and logistics company based in Lowell, Arkansas. Founded in 1961, the organization has grown to be one of the largest carriers in the United States, in part due to a commitment to its people and constant innovation. “We’re continuously looking for new ways that our people, technology, and capacity can be leveraged,” says Brandon Stanley, Senior Director of Procurement.

A business on the move

J.B. Hunt employs over 22,000 drivers to support its network across North America. This means a lot of people and tractors on the road—but logistics are J.B. Hunt’s specialty.

While drivers move tractors, a team of operations managers monitor and arrange drivers’ movements. This includes transportation to get drivers to and from customer and J.B. Hunt facilities, in the event of a breakdown, or when a reposition is needed. Today, J.B. Hunt uses Uber for Business to provide transportation to drivers and corporate ground transportation, but it wasn’t always that way.

Previously, operations managers used another platform to provide ridesharing for drivers as needed, but using J.B. Hunt’s innovative spirit, Stanley’s team decided to reassess. They needed a platform that could help support a continually expanding employee base and improve J.B. Hunt’s position in transportation, Stanley says. The company ultimately selected Uber for Business because of its robust and flexible technology, opportunity to optimize cost, advanced security and auditing capabilities, and a footprint large enough to match its expansive network.

Simplifying with Central

Central fit the bill to help monitor and arrange driver transportation. The Central dashboard allows operations managers to coordinate one-way or round-trip Uber rides for drivers, control pickup and dropoff locations, track usage, and more. Drivers don’t need the Uber app to get a ride, but many already have it. “For most drivers, the switch to Uber felt natural, because they use the product in their personal life,” says Amber Forga, Travel Procurement Specialist.

The J.B. Hunt team also onboarded Uber for Business to manage ground transportation for travelers on the road for conferences, meetings, and more. Using the Uber for Business Dashboard, the Procurement team can set usage policies and manage spending and expenses for corporate travel.

Onboarding with ease

As it got started, the J.B. Hunt team felt well supported. “I can sometimes expect the worst, but moving to Uber for Business was probably the easiest transition I’ve done,” Forga says. To help educate employees on the new product, J.B. Hunt hosted an Uber Day, which included a webinar and trainings, created with a dedicated onboarding team from Uber for Business. “The support we receive from Uber for Business is superb,” she adds.

A relationship that goes the distance

Since driver transportation and corporate travel programs launched, J.B. Hunt has seen benefits for its employees and its bottom line.

Employees and drivers appreciate using a familiar app with good technical support and coverage. “I don’t see feedback nearly as often that an employee couldn’t find a ride,” Forga says. The Procurement team appreciates the ability to implement cost controls to make sure employees follow policies. “Program compliance has gotten better,” Forga adds.

Most importantly, the J.B. Hunt team’s input has created a collaborative relationship between the 2 companies. “What Uber brought to the table was the ability for J.B. Hunt to recommend how to make the product better,” Stanley says. “They’re willing to take our feedback to the developers and push for platform improvements. That’s a real game changer.”
