New York City Driver Benefits

Driver benefits established through Uber’s agreement with the New York Attorney General and New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) rules are designed to support driver earnings, provide stability, and improve access to essential protections.

Below is an overview of key benefits currently available to eligible drivers in New York City.

Minimum Earnings

For trips that begin in New York City, drivers receive earnings that meet or exceed the minimum pay standard set by the NYC TLC. The TLC minimum pay standard is based on a formula that considers factors such as time, distance, and driver utilization rates, and is subject to periodic updates by the TLC. As of March 1, 2026, the TLC rates for trips within city limits are $1.283/mile and $0.681/mile. Different rates may apply to wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) trips and portions of trips that occur outside New York City.

On-trip incentives and guarantees are considered as part of your earnings when your minimum earnings are calculated. Tips, customer-charged fees (like tolls and cleaning fees), and offline promotions such as referrals are not included when calculating your minimum earnings.

Black Car Fund Benefits

The New York Black Car Fund provides benefits to eligible for-hire drivers across New York State, including those who drive using the Uber platform. The Fund is supported through a small surcharge on passenger trips.

Through the Black Car Fund, eligible drivers may have access to benefits such as:

  • Workers’ compensation
  • Dental and vision care
  • Death benefits

These benefits are intended to provide financial protection and support during times of need, such as injury, illness, or family caregiving.

Eligibility, coverage, and benefit amounts are determined by the Black Car Fund in accordance with applicable laws and program rules. Drivers can learn more through the Driver app or by visiting the Black Car Fund website.

Unemployment Insurance

Drivers may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits through the New York State Department of Labor, depending on individual circumstances. Uber contributes to unemployment insurance on behalf of drivers in New York, in accordance with state requirements.

Unemployment insurance may provide temporary financial assistance to those who experience a reduction in available work or loss of income and meet state eligibility requirements. Eligibility is determined by the State and may depend on factors such as work history, earnings, and applicable law.

Paid Sick Leave

Eligible drivers may have access to paid sick leave, in accordance with applicable program rules.

Accrual

Drivers may accrue paid sick leave based on time spent en route or completing trips. Currently, drivers can earn 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 56 hours per year. Accrual rates, caps, and eligibility requirements are determined by the program and may be updated periodically.

Use of paid sick leave

Paid sick leave may be used for qualifying reasons, including:

  • A driver’s own mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition
  • Diagnosis, care, or preventive medical treatment
  • Caring for certain family members
  • Certain absences related to domestic violence or similar circumstances

Drivers are not required to provide detailed medical information when requesting paid sick leave, subject to applicable program requirements.

Payment

As of March 1, 2026, 1 hour of PSSL can be redeemed for $18.58.
