Your autonomous ride is arriving now
Live in Austin, TX, and coming soon to Atlanta, GA
At Uber, we’re reimagining how the world moves—a future where autonomous vehicles and human drivers work side by side to help make transportation affordable, sustainable, and accessible for all.
We’ve partnered with Waymo to bring autonomous ridesharing to Austin and Atlanta, only on the Uber app. In these cities, riders may get matched with a Waymo fully autonomous, all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicle. With Waymo’s technology and Uber’s proven platform, we’re ready to bring you the ride of the future, today.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the autonomous vehicle (AV) preference?
Uber customers who are excited about riding in an autonomous vehicle, without a human driver behind the wheel, can increase their chances of being matched with a Waymo upon launch by opting in through the Ride Preferences section of their Uber app in Settings.
- Will customers be able to rate their ride, like they can with a typical Uber ride?
Yes, once the trip is over, customers will be prompted to rate their ride.
- What kind of cars does Waymo use?
The Waymo fleet consists of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles.
- How many people can ride in a Waymo car?
Waymo’s vehicles currently accommodate up to 4 riders (in any seat but the driver’s seat).
- What type of ride do I need to request to be matched with a Waymo vehicle?
Riders who request an UberX, Uber Green*, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric will have the opportunity to be matched with a Waymo vehicle. Riders who request UberXL, UberX Share, Uber Premier, or others not listed here will not be offered a Waymo.
- Will riders be charged for the rides?
Yes, riders will pay the UberX, Uber Green*, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric rates when matched with a Waymo vehicle and will receive upfront pricing in the Uber app. If a Waymo is available to complete the trip, you will be notified and will receive the option to confirm before the autonomous vehicle is dispatched to pick you up.
- What are the hours of operation?
Waymo vehicles will be available for Uber trips 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- How long will the Waymo car wait for me?
Uber customers have 7 minutes to board their Waymo car. However, if a rider has reached one of the vehicles but needs extra time to get settled before starting their trip, the vehicle will wait. In some instances, Waymo’s Rider Support team may call in to ask if the rider needs additional assistance.
- Do the Waymo cars have kids' car seats?
No. For passengers under 8 years old, you’ll need to bring a car or booster seat on your Waymo ride and secure it in the back seat according to the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Children under the age of 8 cannot sit in the front seat.
- Can I ride with an animal?
Some passengers may have allergies, so please leave pets at home out of respect to future riders. Service animals are always welcome in Waymo cars.
- How do I know the car is mine?
Always check that vehicle details (license plate, car make/model) match what is in the Uber app. Once the Waymo vehicle has arrived at the pickup location, it will display your initials on its rooftop dome so that you can easily identify it at pickup.
- Can I use the trunk?
Yes, simply choose the Trunk button in the Uber app, next to Horn. This will unlock the Waymo vehicle and open the trunk. You can also open the trunk by pressing the trunk release button above the license plate.
- How do Waymo and Uber help enable safe autonomous rides?
Safety is a top priority for both Uber and Waymo, so any AV on the Uber network must meet all of our Safety Guidelines. To that end, Waymo is already improving road safety in the cities in which it operates, and their vehicles have tens of millions of miles of real-world driving experience navigating complex road conditions using the Waymo Driver’s suite of sensors.
If you ever need help during a ride, you can contact support through the Uber app or Waymo’s in-car screen. Plus, Uber’s safety features—accessible via the blue safety shield in the app—are always available to ensure a smooth experience.
- Are there cameras and microphones in the car?
The cameras in the vehicle allow Waymo to ensure that your ride goes smoothly. Among other things, they allow Waymo to make sure cars are clean, find lost items, provide help in emergencies, and make sure in-car rules are followed.
Microphones inside the car are never active unless Waymo’s Rider Support team is called during a ride.
- If Uber for teens is available in my city, will teen accounts be eligible to be matched with an autonomous ride?
No. At this time, teen accounts will not be eligible to be matched with an autonomous vehicle.
- I’m a driver, where can I find out more, and what this means for me?
You can check out our driver blog post with more driver-specific questions and answers.
