Keep Uber in Portsmouth

On Monday, the Portsmouth City Council will consider an ordinance that, if enacted, will destroy your ability to get a safe, reliable ride when needed most through the Uber app. Because of this, we’re calling on you to speak out on behalf of Uber in your city.

Despite multiple conversations with city staff regarding the fundamental differences between Uber and taxi, the City of Portsmouth is applying outdated regulations to this new, innovative transportation option.

Uber is a technology company that connects riders to drivers in over 290 cities around the world. Very simply, you open the app, set your location, and request a ride—all from your smartphone. All drivers go through our extensive background check process and every ride is insured up to $1m.

Rather than take the time to learn about our background check process and other features that make Uber safer than a taxi, they want to simply treat this new option exactly like a taxi. This approach will make it impossible for Uber to offer a reliable ride when you need one, and as such, we will have no choice but to withdraw from Portsmouth.

If you care about transportation alternatives and ensuring that Portsmouth embraces innovation and new ideas, then ask your City Council to work with us and put on hold any ordinance which would restrict your choice in transportation.
