With Fast Lane, Uber makes getting your TLC license easy and affordable
Uber NYC

Say “hello” to Fast Lane: our way to help you get a TLC license quickly and easily, on a schedule that works for you.

Here’s how it works: make an appointment to visit one of our NYC Greenlight Hubs, where an Uber Expert will help you schedule the required coursework, submit the online application, and learn about vehicle options.

Start to finish, the process of getting your TLC license takes about 3-5 weeks, but the training and coursework required ensure you’ll be prepared to drive in NYC and maximize your earnings — and Uber is here to assist you every step of the way.

How to get a TLC license

Get your TLC license in 8 steps

Step 1: Submit your TLC application

The first step to get on the road: submit an application for a TLC license. You can do this yourself on the TLC website, or you can visit a Greenlight Hub to get assistance from an Uber Expert and a head-start on the other required steps. Be sure to save your TLC application number — you’ll need to reference this at each step of the licensing process.

Ready to begin? Schedule your visit to get started.

Step 2: Upgrade to a Class E or CDL license

Something else you’ll need to do is upgrade your NY state driver’s license to Class E, unless you already have a Class E or CDL license. If your license is out of state, you’ll need to request a certified abstract. Once you’ve upgraded, email a copy of your license or abstract with your application number to newdrivermr@tlc.nyc.gov or bring it with you to your next Uber visit.

You can upgrade your license at any time—don’t wait until the last minute!

Step 3: Complete a WAV class

Whether you drive a wheelchair accessible vehicle or not, all NYC TLC driver license applicants must complete a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) class. You can take this class for free at an Uber Greenlight Hub.

Step 4: Take a defensive driving course

Next up, you’ll need to complete a TLC-required defensive driving course. The course is offered free of charge at a Greenlight Hub, and we recommend you completely it during the same visit in which you take the WAV class. Can’t make it to a Greenlight Hub? No problem—you can also take a defensive driving course online and email your certificate directly to the TLC.

Step 5: Take the FHV class and pass the exam

You’ll also have to complete a For-Hire Vehicle (FHV) course testing your knowledge of New York City, the rules of the road, and TLC regulations. Uber’s partner school has top pass rates, instructors who are also drivers, multiple language options, and student-tested materials to help you pass the accompanying exam.

Step 6: Get a TLC medical exam

The TLC requires applicants to take a quick, non-intrusive medical exam. Free medical exams are offered at Greenlight Hubs and can be taken at the same time as any of your other visits. You can also take the medical exam on your own at any certified physician’s office.

Step 7: Record your fingerprints

The TLC requires all applicants be fingerprinted. You can schedule an appointment online for any of the many centers located throughout New York.

Step 8: Pass a drug test

To meet TLC requirements, all partners need to pass a drug test, administered at a certified drug test center. No appointment necessary — you can go to the drug test center right next to Uber’s Greenlight Hub next time you visit the Falchi Building.

Once you’ve got your TLC license, our Fast Lane program will guide you to a TLC-ready car, or help you get a car you already own TLC-ready.

While there are multiple steps involved with getting your TLC license, at the Greenlight Hub, we’ll explain the TLC process in detail and answer any questions you have. Schedule a visit to a Greenlight Hub today.
