The future just pulled up
Introducing autonomous vehicles on Uber. We're committed to advancing safe, accessible transportation by combining autonomous vehicles and drivers for a more reliable, affordable, and sustainable future.
Here's how it works
Our vision
We’re reimagining movement with autonomous vehicles as a key part of the future. Partnering with industry leaders, we’re using a safety-driven approach for a best-in-class experience that combines autonomous vehicles and drivers.
Choosing AV partners
We collaborate with autonomous vehicle developers, fleet operators, and cities to help connect riders with AVs that:
- Meet our high expectations for security, privacy, and safety
- Provide new experiences and opportunities for riders
Safety first
Safety drives our autonomous future. Uber's Autonomous Mobility and Delivery Safety Program ensures consistent standards for evaluating, testing, and operating AVs across our platform.
The AV experience
To boost your chances of matching with an autonomous vehicle, open your Uber app and go to Account > Settings > Ride Preferences> Autonomous vehicles and toggle on the preference. Make sure you're on the most up-to-date Uber app version.
When AVs first come to your city, some rides may have a specialist in the driver’s seat to monitor the trip and help ensure a smooth experience.
Meet our partners
We’re partnering with industry leaders to drive the future of autonomous transportation and create better outcomes for our communities.
Frequently asked questions: general
- What is an autonomous vehicle?
Also called an AV, an autonomous vehicle is a ride that does not require a driver.
- How do I request a ride with an AV?
At the moment, Uber doesn’t have the option to request an autonomous ride directly. By turning on Autonomous vehicles in the Ride Preferences section of your Uber app settings, you can boost your chances of matching with an AV when requesting UberX, Wait & Save, Electric, Comfort, and Comfort Electric (product and availability may vary by market, location, or applicable laws). If an AV is available to complete the trip, you will be notified and will receive the option to confirm before it’s dispatched to pick you up.
- What is the autonomous vehicle preference?
Uber customers who are excited about riding in an AV, without a driver behind the wheel, can increase their chances of being matched with an autonomous vehicle by opting in through the Ride Preferences section of their Uber app under Settings.
- What type of ride do I need to request to be matched with an autonomous vehicle?
Riders who request an UberX, Wait & Save, Electric, Comfort, or Comfort Electric will have the opportunity to be matched with an autonomous vehicle (product and availability may vary by market, location, or applicable laws). Riders who request UberXL, UberX Share, Uber Premier, or others not listed here will not be offered an AV.
- How do pickup and dropoff work with an autonomous vehicle?
After the AV has arrived at your pickup location, check that the vehicle details (license plate, car make/model) match what’s in the Uber app. When you’re ready to hop in, you can unlock the vehicle by choosing Unlock car in the Uber app. Upon reaching your destination, make sure you have all your belongings, and exit as you would with any other rideshare vehicle.
- How long will the AV wait for me?
Uber customers have 7 minutes to board their autonomous vehicle.
- Can I bring other passengers on my Uber trip in an autonomous vehicle?
Yes. Just like typical Uber rides, passengers are welcome to join you on your Uber trip in an autonomous vehicle. Depending on the vehicle and our partner, you can have a total of 3 or 4 riders in the car. Please check the ride capacity information in the AV offer card when you book.
- Can I use the trunk?
Yes. Choose the Trunk button in the Uber app, next to Horn, to unlock and open the trunk. If the button is not available in-app, you can also open the trunk by using the trunk release button just above the car’s rear license plate. Please make sure to close the trunk manually.
- Do the AVs have kids’ car seats?
No. For passengers with children who require a car or booster seat, you’ll need to bring a seat and secure it in the back seat of the autonomous vehicle according to the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Children requiring a booster or car seat cannot sit in the front seat. Passengers must follow local law regarding car and booster seat age and weight requirements.
- Can I ride with an animal?
Some passengers may have allergies, so please leave pets at home out of respect for future riders.Service animals are always welcome in autonomous vehicles.
- Will I be able to rate my ride, like I can with a typical Uber ride?
Yes, once the trip is over, you’ll be prompted to rate your ride.
- Will I be charged for the ride?
Yes, you’ll receive upfront pricing in the Uber app when you request UberX, Wait & Save, Electric, Comfort, or Comfort Electric and you’ll pay that rate if matched with an autonomous vehicle (product and availability may vary by market, location, or applicable laws).
- Why do some rides have a person in the front seat of the car?
AV specialists on board are responsible for monitoring the performance of the autonomous driving system. They can provide assistance in the event that the vehicle is unable to complete the trip. They’re part of the process of developing an autonomous vehicle that can operate without a human on board.
- How are drivers impacted?
We’re committed to building a hybrid Uber where AVs and drivers serve customers in their own unique way.
What this means:
- Drivers will continue to play an essential role in delivering safe, reliable, and personalized experiences for riders.
- AVs are limited by geography. They will only operate in select areas where the technology is ready and approved.
- AVs will complement drivers, not replace them. Autonomous vehicles will help meet rider demand during busy periods or in locations where driver availability is low.
- Expanding our ride options draws more riders, creating more earning opportunities for drivers.
- Our future is built on partnership, combining the strengths of technology with the skills of drivers to serve riders better, everywhere.

Frequently asked questions: safety
- Are AVs safe?
Safety is central to every ride we offer. Our partners design, build, and operate autonomous vehicle technologies with safety as a core priority. We’ve established a program to assess each partner’s safety approach for alignment with industry standards and best practices, as outlined in our AV safety guidelines. We’re committed to ensuring that when Uber introduces autonomous vehicles to our network and communities, it’s done with the highest standards of safety diligence.
- Can I communicate with a person if I need help during the ride?
If you ever need help during a ride, you can always contact support 24/7 through the Uber app. In addition to the Uber app, some AVs have support available through the in-car screen. Plus, Uber’s safety features—accessible by selecting the blue safety shield in the app—are always available to help ensure a smooth experience.
- How do autonomous partners and Uber help enable safe autonomous rides?
Safety is a top priority for both Uber and our autonomous partners, so any AV on the Uber network must meet all of our safety guidelines.
- How do I know the car is mine?
Always check that vehicle details (license plate, car make/model) match what’s in the Uber app.
- Are there cameras and microphones in the car?
The cameras in the vehicle allow our partners to ensure that your ride goes smoothly. Among other things, they allow the partners to make sure cars are clean, find lost items, provide help in emergencies, and make sure in-car rules are followed. Camera footage is only reviewed as needed.
Autonomous vehicles may record audio.
