The COVID-19 pandemic has left millions of Americans struggling to put food on their tables and unsure how to access their next meal. As health and safety remains our top priority, we are working quickly to adapt our technology to respond in times of extreme circumstances and ensure we are helping to provide support to those in need. Today, we’re proud to do our small part to help vulnerable populations and frontline healthcare workers through nationwide partnerships with both Feeding America and World Central Kitchen, as well as older adults and those without access to smartphones through a new phone booking product feature.
Meal delivery with Feeding America
We’ve partnered with Feeding America and its nationwide network of more than 200 food banks to deliver meals to those who need them most, including the food insecure, the homebound elderly, families and more.
We are launching with food banks in NYC, San Francisco, Oakland and Tampa this week, and will be expanding over the coming weeks. Uber Eats will primarily help facilitate food delivery, connecting food banks and food pantries to delivery people who can bring meals to homes directly. We’ll also use the Uber Freight app to help enable food distribution.
300,000 meals with World Central Kitchen
Uber and World Central Kitchen have teamed up to deliver 300,000 meals to vulnerable populations and frontline healthcare workers. In close partnership with World Central Kitchen, Uber Eats has designed an operational infrastructure that allows restaurants to join the platform, receive bulk meal orders and send them via large-capacity vehicles to drop off locations, such as elderly homes and hospitals. Following a successful pilot with World Central Kitchen in Washington, DC, the partnership is expanding to deliver meals in the Bronx and Newark. From there, we plan to expand to Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Atlanta, San Jose and Dallas.
1-833-USE-UBER for Uber Eats
We are proud to expand 1-833-USE-UBER to facilitate delivery supporting older adults – and anyone – who prefers a helpful conversation when ordering a meal. This new phone booking feature lets you dial to dine-in without having to use the Uber app. It’s another way our platform is evolving to meet the needs of our users in these challenging times, as many shelter-in-place.
After dialing 1-833-USE-UBER, you’ll be paired with a live team member who confirms your meal request and provides an upfront price total, using the same marketplace technology powering Uber Eats. As with the Uber Eats app and website, this feature may be used at no extra charge*. In order to use this feature if you’re a new Uber Eats user, you’ll need an SMS or text-based mobile phone to verify your account with a one-time message authentication.
This new feature combines the efficiency of Uber’s matching technology with the convenience and additional guidance of a live team member. We built it based on feedback from older adults who told us they appreciated using 1-833-USE-UBER for rides when we began piloting it in February 2020.
1-833-USE-UBER is now available to all of New York City (all five boroughs) and the greater Miami area. We plan to roll this feature out to more cities nationwide in the coming weeks.
