Uber wouldn’t be Uber without the drivers that use our platform. They’re at the heart of everything we do as a business. That’s why we’ve been working hard to ensure they have the support and protections they need and the flexibility they want.
In 2018 we partnered with AXA to ensure that all our drivers have benefits, such as access to sickness cover, or the New Parent Payment to make starting a family that little bit easier. You can find more information here.
In 2019 our partnership with The Open University began to give our loyal drivers access to free courses for themselves or a family member, helping them to follow their dreams beyond using Uber. You can find more information on this opportunity here.
What’s new in 2021?
From 16th March this year, we made a commitment that drivers using Uber would immediately be entitled to a number of worker protections whilst driving on the Uber app:
- National Living Wage: Every driver is guaranteed to earn at least the National Living Wage, although they can and do earn more. This is an earnings floor, not a ceiling, and most drivers regularly exceed the National Living Wage in the pay they take home.
- Holiday Pay: Drivers now receive holiday pay. They get paid an additional 12.07% of their earnings, paid each week, making it easier to plan some much needed downtime with family and friends.
- Pension Contributions: A pension plan will be available for all eligible drivers, which we’ll be sharing more details about in the coming months. It’ll include contributions from Uber and drivers, helping drivers plan ahead and build a nest egg for the future.
We have also joined forces with GMB Union in a groundbreaking trade union recognition deal. This means that drivers will retain the freedom to choose if, when and where they drive whilst also having the choice to be represented by GMB.
All this, only on Uber
We’re proud to take this latest step forward in improving benefits and protections for drivers. It’s the right thing to do, and we will continue to listen to drivers and ensure that we provide access to the benefits and protections they want, while they retain the flexibility to choose if, when and where they drive.
In the meantime, the next time you use the Uber app, you’ll ride safe in the knowledge that your driver has all these worker protections and benefits. Only on Uber.
The benefits described here as only available on Uber are in comparison to other major app based competitors in London.
