Helping to move Europe when Europe is moved: Uber’s response to the European refugee crisis
8 September 2015 / London
We’ve been inundated with donations, and unfortunately we couldn’t fulfil every request.
To get to as many people as possible and collect all the donations we can, we have decided to extend UberGIVING. From 2pm tomorrow, 10th September, you will again be able to request an UberGIVING car to collect your donations.
The refugee crisis has moved everyone and at Uber we want to do our bit to help too. So today we are launching UberGIVING as part of a pan-European initiative across more than 20 European countries. In the UK, we are partnering with Save the Children.
On Wednesday, September 9th, between the hours of 12pm and 8pm, Uber will collect items you wish to donate – free of charge – and deliver them to Save the Children for sale in their shops across the country. The proceeds of all sales will be used to fund Save The Children’s work, and their Child Refugee Crisis Appeal which supports thousands of children affected by the refugee crisis.
How does it work?
- Open the Uber app at any time during the initiative and swipe the slider to ‘GIVING’
- Request a car – completely free of charge – to pick up your donations within minutes
- Donations will be delivered to Save the Children for sale in their network of shops
We are accepting all unwanted clothes (particularly designer or vintage items), books, homeware, toys, music and films that can be sold by your local Save the Children shop. You can find a full list of suitable items here. Please make sure that everything that you want collected is placed together in bags, it will make it much easier for us and the teams at the collection points to get your donations to where they’re needed.
We’re all used to getting a ride at the push of a button. Now, we want to use Uber to help refugees in desperate need. As always, none of this would be possible without our amazing partner-drivers.
Thank you for your support!
