COVID-19 update: The health and safety of everybody who uses Uber is always our priority. We encourage all drivers to do their part to help flatten the curve and stay home when possible–especially if you’re feeling sick. We remind drivers that Greenlight Hubs remain closed and a number of third-party services are not available. Account activation may be delayed as a result.
Instructions for drivers
1. Sign up online
Tell us a little about yourself and your car by creating a driver profile.
2. Minimum vehicle requirements
Your vehicle must meet the requirements to drive or deliver with Uber in Toronto. There are many options available, check to see which ones your vehicle qualifies for.
3. Share your documents
Take photos of the following documents and upload them to your account:
- Driver's licence: 21+ years old, Ontario G Driver’s Licence or equivalent
- Proof of work eligibility: Birth certificate, Citizenship card, Passport, Residency card, or Work permit
- Vehicle registration: Both sides of the registration are required. The car must also be in good condition with no cosmetic damage, have 4 doors, no commercial branding, and cannot be rebuilt or salvaged. You are not required to own the vehicle.
- Vehicle insurance: Insurance must be in your name and must be legible.
4. Background screening
Visit your nearest Greenlight Hub to complete a background screening. It will review your driving record and criminal history. Be sure to bring your Ontario driver’s licence and 1 other piece of ID with you.
5. Vehicle inspection
Your vehicle must pass an inspection by a licenced mechanic to receive a Safety Standards (SSC) each year. You must upload a photo of this document within 36 days of passing the inspection.
6. PTC Licence
If your vehicle is 7 years (2012 model year) or newer, we'll submit an application to the City of Toronto for your Private Transportation Company (PTC) licence once you've passed the steps above. It should only take up to 5 days to process. Once you receive your PTC licence to drive in the City of Toronto, you will also be able to accept requests in the City of Mississauga and Town of Oakville.
If you have a vehicle older than 7 years (2012 model year), there are still options available. While you cannot pick up riders in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, and Town of Oakville, you can drive in the GTA. You also may qualify to deliver with UberEATS.
Why you'll love driving
1. Set your own schedule
You can drive with Uber anytime, day or night, 365 days a year. When you drive is always up to you, so it never gets in the way of the important things in your life.
2. Make more at every turn
Trip fares start with a base amount, then increase with time and distance. And when there are more people needing rides than normal, drivers make more.
3. Meet new people and learn about your city
You'll meet and have conversations with people from all walks of life. From long-time residents to first-time tourists, families, small business owners and more.
You'll also become an expert on the Greater Toronto Area and discover new places to show your friends and family.
To drive with Uber in Toronto, you must receive a Private Transportation Company (PTC) driver's licence. We'll be there every step of the way to answer any questions you have and help you through the process.
