We’re continuing our series called “Why I Ride”, which highlights our top riders in the community. We will be showcasing a handful of entrepreneurs, community leaders and some recognizable local faces who are sharing their stories of Uber around the island.
We recently had the chance to catch up with Shannon, a Job Resource Specialist for the City and County of Honolulu, to find out why he rides! See below for his story:
Why do you ride?
I am a proud user of Uber for many reasons. One of which is the sense of comfort I feel when processing a payment as the receipt is sent directly into my e-mail. As a person who happens to be blind, having full control of my finances and transparency about my ride is invaluable.
What makes you feel safe about riding with Uber?
Knowing my driver’s name, car make, and license plate number makes me feel like I’m getting in the car with an old friend, rather than a stranger.
What occasions do you use Uber?
I use Uber for everything, work, social events, and if I’m transferring a large amount of groceries.
What is your favorite feature in the app?
My favorite feature in the app is the ETA. I now have an approximate idea of how much time I have to do things prior to my ride arriving.
When did you first download the Uber app?
2014, as soon as I heard that uberX was nearly half the price of a taxi.
What is your favorite Uber option (product) and why?
uberX is my favorite option on the app because it is what I have gotten most familiar with. Uber XL is great for when I’m with a large group, but I am typically by myself when I request an Uber.
What is your favorite place to Uber to?
Work, I now get a very appreciated extra hour of sleep!

Before Getting into the Car
- No more street hails or waiting outside to find a ride. You can start the Uber app from anywhere and wait safely for your car to arrive.
- Trips are no longer anonymous. When a driver accepts your request, you see his or her first name, photo, and license plate number. You can also check whether others have had a good experience with him or her by viewing their rating.
During the Ride
- Never get lost. You can see the route on the map in the app.
- Share your ETA and location. You can easily share your ride details, including the specific route and estimated time of arrival, with friends or family for extra peace of mind.
After the Ride
- Feedback and ratings after every trip. After every ride, you and your drivers are asked to rate each other and provide feedback.
- 24/7 Support. If something happens in a car, our customer support team is ready to respond to any issues 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Rapid Response. We have a dedicated Incident Response Team to answer any more urgent issues.
